I was at Schloss Basthorst in June 2011 on a business convention. The hotel is beautiful, although the old, original building has more atmosphere than the new "block" that they added. My room was in the new building - although it was beautifully furnished, nicely sized and had a great bathroom, it somehow seemd too new (it smelled like fresh paint, so that may have added to the sensation ;-)). The food is excellent, although the service could be better. We were in a large group, and serving dinner (three courses) took about three and a half hours. A bit long... however, the hotel is set in a nice landscape - you can stroll down to a nice lake and back.
The only thing you have to be aware of: Schloss Basthorst seems to be in the middle of a "Funkloch", meaning that you have absolutely no mobile service. They have an internet terminal, but since the connection is via UMTS, it is not very reliable. But is has to be said - this does make relaxing easier ;-).

We had a very reasonable offer from this hotel, so we were a little nervous about what to expect. But we were in luck. The rooms were big with nice bathrooms (and bathrobes) and the location in the small town of Basthorst is charming. The spa is big and newly renovated, but the pool is on the small side. The staff was friendly and able to speak some English.
