“Just the basics”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2010

I stayed at the Alpha Hotel for two nights with my wife and young child as it was conveniently located near our friend's apartment. The reviews on Trip Advisor suggest the hotel is a cosy, family run hotel, however in reality it's rather drab and kitsch.

Our friends had made the booking for us and were advised we would be placed in a family room with kitchenette (ideal for preparing baby feeds etc). The room was small and the 'kitchenette' was just a cramped bench space along the narrow corridor. The carpets were stained and dirty, and the hotel reeked of tobacco smoke.

We had requested a cot be provided and this was absent when we arrived (we carried our own travel cot and set it up ourselves), and the requested highchair was also absent (but one was found by hotel staff after more than a little fuss).

The hotel is well located and some of the staff are friendly, but it is cluttered and garish, and not the most comfortable place to stay. Hotel Alpha needs a makeover in almost every department.

“Cosy hotel with simple pleasures”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2009

This is a small family run hotel but has a cosy feeling and a place we use all the time. The rooms are well appointed and there are special touches including a small basket of goodies to munch on. The bathroom has a basket with small essentials including spectacle cleaning wipes. There is a hot water bag if you need it. The breakfast has a Mediterranean spread with vegetables drenched in olive oil, and also has the usual cold cuts, a variety of cheese and preserves. The décor and presentation of the breakfast buffet sets the perfect mood for a great start. The down side is that the elevator is very small and can only accommodate 2 guests if they stand very close to each other. The bathroom size is rather small in the double bed rooms, and the same maybe the case in the singles too. The suites have more space including sofa seating and a dining table with kitchenette and a large fridge. The hotel is a 7-10 minute walk from the Hannover Hbf railway station but its very easy to find.

“Fine small hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2007

Stayed there a few years ago (before I got into trip advisor). It was fine if you like small hotels with a personal touch rather than large ones with facilities. It is a couple of blocks behind main station so quite handily placed for travelling. The decor is quite lavish with marionettes - a bit over the top actually. Rooms vary. I had a huge one but others were quite small. One has its own door opening onto the street. Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fine probably aimed at more South Eastern European guests. Well placed for nightclubs in plaza behind station and some studenty bars in the locality. Area OK at the hotel end of the street and we had no problems at all, but is apparantly a bit seedy towards the station end towards the tower. Would stay there again at the right price but there are better hotels in Hannover. For comments about these and Hannover in general see other reviews of Maritim Grand and Grand Mussmann.

“Nothing too much trouble.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2006

Also in Hannover for the World Cup. Had been before and knew it to be a fine city, however this is not the type of hotel I might normally choose. During world Cup this hotel and many others put their prices to fair rate, or messe rate, as they do for any big event. None bigger than the World Cup!

Limited places available this seemed the most suitable. Warmly welcomed and shown to room personally. Room and bathroom spotless. Lots of little touches in the room and some in the bathroom, bathroom was a bit cramped. Sweets, leaflets re World Cup and city etc. room was hot though as we didnt get much of a breeze through the window.

On arrival they moved one of the hotel cars to allow me to park right by our front door, most considerate. Great for luggage transportation and despite being on public street it was free.

Easy walk of less than 5 mins to main station. Think there is an annexe further down the street we were at Friesenstr. 19.

Breakfast full and with plenty of choice.

One of the requests in the book in the room was that as a family busines they preferred cash but were ok with cards. I paid cash. They gave us a little pack of a bifi sasuasge and biscuits for our journey.

Seemed that nothing was too much trouble.

“Comfortable, home touch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2006

We were in Germany for the World Cup, and I have to admit, we were a little disappointed to have a game in Hannover. However, the city turned out to be better than expected, and the Hotel Alpha was a surprising, and welcome, home away from home. I think there may be two Hotel Alpha's in Hannover, we stayed in the one on Friesenstrasse. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Although we thought we would have a typical double room, we had a room on the top floor that was extremely spacious, with its own kitchenette, a large bathroom, a table, a couch and a number of touches that made it feel like a home away from home. Breakfast was excellent- a huge buffet with both cold and hot options. Beyond your typical German breakfast. The hotel was a bit pricey (Euro 129), but that was actually relatively inexpensive compared to what other hotels were offering during the World Cup. Unlike some other hotels we felt like we got what we paid for.
