Our room was on the 12th floor, beautiful view over the city. A park to stroll in just around the corner and the brakfast was incredible, more like a brunch! Totally worth every euro.

The Ramada in Kassel is mixture of good and ordinary. The staff is friendly, the rooms are large, and the breakfast very good (it was included in my rate), bottled water was available in several places, and the rate was a good value. For my stay, the housekeeping was terrible...the squeeze bottle soap ran out and was not refilled, and the same for the tissues, and some things were left half-done…even though I left a room tip. Most European hotels have stopped providing separate soap and shampoo...so when it runs out, there are no options (bring your own is the take-away here). I believe the whole hotel is non-smoking, which is nice for Europe. The television is an old CRT and just CNN and CNBC are available in English; the bathroom has a TV speaker which was cute. Internet is available through T-mobile wireless, at a large fee, or, if you have a US T-mobile WiFi account, it is $0.18 a minute.

To get to the hotel, it is about a 15 minute walk (uphill) from the DB station. You can take the #4 Tram which will drop you off about a half block from the front door. There is a parking garage across the street, but I did not find out if there is a charge.

Save some time to visit Kassel, including the park, as it is a hidden gem of a city.

The Ramada in Kassel gives you decent rooms for a decent price. It seems like only 1/2 the rooms had air conditioning as my colleague had and I did not. Everything was clean and the TV had three channels in English (which is normal in Germany). Only problem is that CNN kept cutting in and out. Stay away from the breakfast for 15 euro if you are paying....if your comapny is paying, why not. 20 min walk to the middle of the "city" or a free tram ride.

All rankings are out of ten (10 being the best). Town charm reflects the overall tourist appeal of the city since we enjoy walking the streets, visiting shops and sitting on street cafes. It does not reflect the number of activities or size of the city.

Unfortunately, we only visited the downtown pedestrian shopping district and did not see the palace. This was a mistake since the city was largely bombed and rebuilt after WWII and lacks the charm of other Germanic cities this size. If you find yourself in Kassel then try the palace for a visit instead of the city. Luckily, Kassel was only intended as a stopover on our trip. The Ramada is what you'd expect from the large chain hotel.
