“Large rooms in a charmingly old building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Arriving early in the morning, I was planning to drop off my luggage and kill some time in the City. But the moment I entered the Hotel, I was treated like a long time guest which epitomises the experience at the Am Berg.

Located up a hill in the more residential part of Sachsenhausen (across the Main River to the South of the City Centre), it is literally a 8 minute walk downhill to Sud Bahnhof (the Frankfurt South Station). Frankfurt Sud has direct connections either to the City Centre or Frankfurt Messe (the large exhibition Halls) via either the U or S lines. People with disabilities please note that this is an old Hotel, so apart form a short walk up the Hill there are also steps leading to the front door and no lifts in the Hotel. The restaurant area in Sauschenhausen is located approximately a 15 minute easy walk away.

My room was great in that it was spacious with an ensuite. I believe there are rooms without ensuites so make sure you state your preference when booking. The fittings in the room are dated although everything in the room and bathroom worked perfectly. Note the central heating so there are limited options to turn up or down the heating. I was also impressed that the whole building was wifi (free) enabled which made the limited channels on my tiny television bearable. Breakfast as an option was offered in their dining room on the ground floor. Given that there are only approximately 25 rooms (I was in Room 11), the dining room is quite adequate and the breakfast served at a fixed price of Euro11 was quite substantial. The dining room opens up into a rear courtyard which I imagine would be quite pretty in Summer. Note however that in the mornings, the same 'super' person is the receptionist, cashier, cook, waiter etc etc so if you have an early flight, its best to check out the night before.

Interestingly enough, everything is handwritten and a strong honour system operates. As a result, I had to remind them how many breakfasts I had and also to charge me the cancellation fee for the additional room I had booked for a colleague who couldn't make the trip. Its the first time in a long while that I have submitted a handwritten receipt for my lodgings!

I had travelled to Frankfurt with some colleagues who had all booked Hotel rooms in the City so I had a chance to see close up a lot of accommodation options in the City. Having seen the options available at much higher prices, I personally would revisit Am Berg if I'm ever back to Frankfurt whether alone or with the family.

Room Tip: Request rooms with ensuites

“I loved this hotel for its old world charm.”

I really enjoyed our one night stay here in June 2011. It is a wonderfully charming old building with furnishings and creaky floors that tell you "I am a charming old building". We had the room shown in photos that has the purple curtains and a sitting area. The bathroom was newly renovated. Very nicely done and spacious compared to some European bathrooms I've been in.

We had breakfast in the garden in the back yard. The garden area is quiet and quite pretty. Free parking was convenient and inside a walled space for extra security.

No elevator which didn't matter to us. No air conditioning which didn't matter to us in early June (it was a bit cool at night anyway). Very friendly and helpful staff that spoke good English. Very close to the train station for public transit, but if you want to walk to The Dom it is about 20 minutes worth of walking.

If you want a modern hotel, this is not the place for you. If you want unique charm, then you'll love it.

“Clean hotel close to Sauschenhausen eateries & museums in Frankfurt”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

I picked this place as it was near the places we wanted to visit ie museums & Sachsenhausen. It's also walking distance to the Dom & the centre. It is close (5 min walk) to the Sud Bahnhof. The room was very big with small bathroom & clean. Old fashoned furniture but comfortable. It's in an old house which has been converted into a hotel. The staff spoke good English. Cost was reasonable by German standards, I have paid less in Frankfurt but not to stay in this area. Quiet suburban street. Internet is free but in the foyer. Breakfast was not included in our price.

“Pleasant traditional hotel in quiet residential neighborhood.”

Hotel Am Berg reminded me of the historic bed and breakfasts we have across the United States. Large rooms, creaky stairs and a homey feel. Our rooms were very comfortable, nicely appointed and clean. The optional breakfast was exceptional. If we return to Frankfurt, we would surely consider a return visit.

“Quirky, budget place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2008

Had a great two night stay here. Rooms are unexpectedly well-appointed and sizable for the price (though prices are much higher if a trade fair is in town). Interesting look inside and out. Interesting location too, in Sachsenhausen, just South of the Main. Less touristy, with good restaurants and bars. The core of Frankfurt is pretty small, so if the weather is nice, it's a nice walk over the Main to the rest of town. And if it isn't, plenty of transit options nearby.

Room was clean and the shared shower was too. Many rooms have their own showers, so chances are you won't be sharing it with that many people.

Didn't try breakfast as it wasn't included and there were lots of great places nearby. If you are pregnant, disabled, or just lazy, this is not for you as there is no elevator.
