The Carlton hotel was selected by my partner and myself for a stay whilst visiting an exhibition at the Frankfurt Messe. The location was excellent, just across the road from the railway station and a 15 minute leisurely walk to the exhibition centre with an option of a tram or metro ride there if the weather was bad. The price was also attractive, we paid 70 euro/night for a twin room with breakfast included and free wifi internet.
Up till now everything sounds OK.
The problem was that when we arrived there we were informed that the lift was not working as it was undergoing renovation and we had been put on the 4th floor!! This had been planned in advance by the hotel and would continue for another few months, but the hotel did not advise us when we booked.
If the booking had been done through an agency I would have been less annoyed, but in our case the booking had been done directly with the hotel.
Fortunately my partner and I have strong legs, but carrying suitcases up to the 4th floor on arrival was not a pleasant experience. It was good execise going up and down on foot every day, but that should definitely be optional and not due to misinformation (or more correctly speaking non-information!)
Having said that, everything else about the hotel was satisfactory. The room was comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. Wifi internet worked great in all areas of the hotel and there is also a regular PC in the lobby available for free use if you don't have a laptop.
The staff were very polite and helpful and all spoke excellent English.
I would have given a higher rating to the hotel if the lift episode had not occurred. However, I would definitely stay there again, but would make sure that I checked in advance that nothing unexpected would happen on arrival that I hadn't been told about.
