Stayed here with my husband for 5 nights to explore Hamburg and area.
All in all, a great stay.
As there are fewer dislikes, I will start with those.
- Parking is expensive. 20 Euro per day is almost New York City price. You can activate your parking ticket at the front desk though, and that way have it charged to your room, and it will work again and again and you do not need to deal with change whenever you leave the garage.
- Breakfast is 20 Euro per person. That is just a bit much, in my opinion, so we ate out of the house.
- Only one of the three elevators go into the parking garage. Sometimes you have to wait a little. Just a slight side note.
Liked:
- When you arrive in the garage, you find the lights flashing on and the doors open automatically. When you are attached to some luggage, that is very helpful. You also find a shoe shine machine.
- Check in was easy and uncomplicated. Both clerks were busy on the phone, a third came running to check us in quickly.
- When we entered our room, we were amazed. We had a shower that was almost in the middle of the room, with 2 full sized glass walls. The toilet part was in a very small separate room. Large sink area. We had two large beds connected, so it was probably king sized in total. Flat screen TV with a couple of extra good channels, like the soccer one, for free. You could also choose by language, but there were only news channels for English for example. The desk area was also spacious, as was the closet. Not huge, but big enough! Room comes with a small fridge (be prepared to pay a lot for drinks and snacks here) and a room safe for your use. There are separate AC's in each room.
- We ordered this room with hotel's choice, which is cheapest and got us this beautiful room, but no view. We were on level 2, which seems to be the lowest guest room level, but not sure. It was also in the last corner of the hallway, with the view into a small courtyard. Not very fascinating, but hey, we paid for this, and the room was awesome!
- While we were there, we also had some problems: the bar holding the shower came loose first morning, and we reported this to the front desk and got it repaired during our first day. Also, the AC didn't work at all. Having rather warm duvets here, we woke up in a sweat.
When we went to the front desk, they send someone up to fix it. He came while we were in the room, and noticed that it was broken. We were immediately transferred to the 5th floor, with a bit less spectacular bathroom and slightly smaller closet, but with a view. This time, we were looking to the old houses across the street, and the Hamburger Dom. Happened to be there on a Friday, and got to enjoy a great view of the fireworks, right from our beds.
Both rooms and all hallways and the entrance area were spotlessly clean.
There are few restaurants right around the hotels, but there is one across the street, one Italian food place 3 minutes away, and a whole bunch down past the Michel. There is bakery across the street which offers great breakfast specials, and has a great selection of rolls, cakes and pies, and other bakery items as well as cold drinks, including freshly squeezed orange juice as well as a choice of teas and coffees. It is from a local chain, Dat Backhus. Opens at 7 during the week, 8 on Sundays.
Public transportation is available, but there is no stop right around the hotel. You have to walk a few minutes. Go to either Rödingsmarkt (downhill as you walk to it) or St. Pauli for the subway, or Landungsbrücken. All the same line, pretty much circling the hotel. Coming back choose St. Pauli, as you walk slightly downhill instead of steeper uphill (it is all manageable without hiking shoes, just after a long day of walking around you may prefer walking down, not uphill.)
All hotel staff greet you friendly and cordially, and speak to you like you are their preferred guest and have stayed here hundreds of times. The front desk staff also provided helpful information about where to go and what to see. Next to the front desk you find a large selection of pamphlets of all kinds of things you could possibly want to see/ do while you are there.
Ask at the front desk for a free map of the city and subway system.
