MotelOne Hamburg-Altona is one of four MO properties in Hamburg. The others, execpt for the one at the airport, are located nearer to the downtown area. MO HH-Altona is on Kieler Str, a commercial and residential thoroughfare and it borders on the disctrict of Eimsbüttel (residential area) to the east. The hotel itself follows the known MotelOne standard in supplying travelers with clean, functional rooms that offer the basic amenities (sink, bathroom/shower, TV) but no frills (no wardrobe, no coffee making facilities, no telephone). Breakfast buffet can be purchased for EUR 7.50 in advance or on a cash basis depending on your daily inclination. The buffet is ok but nothing special; if you are looking for something else, there is a McDonald's just up the street, the neighboring area around the Apostelkirche has one or two breakfast options (I recommend Cafe Knüppel, right at the Apostelkirche bus stop). As is the case with all MotelOnes, there is a small bar that also offers (microwaved) snack options. For a full lunch or dinner also refer to the area around the church or a bit further east, on Osterstr. There is a GREAT and cheap Asian place just opposite Apostelkirche (Lappenbergsallee 25) called Nanglo, and they do absolutely superb Korean, Thai, and Nepali dishes (I URGE you to try "Bur Curry", Nepali beef curry).
The hotel connects to the downtown area (including university, central station) via bus 4 (stop Apostelkirche) and to Altona (including Altona station) via buses 183 and 283 (stop Armbruststr.)
What I liked about the Motel One HH-Altona:
- clean
- efficient/functional
- friendly staff
- reasonable prices (59 for a single, 74 for a double)
- good public transport connections (see above for more details)
- relatively new furniture
- nice flatscreen TV
- nice shower
Disliked:
- maid service did not make up my room on one occasion; on reporting I was told by reception that may have been because my "do not disturb" sign was out for half an hour or so - maid service does NOT return to rooms. Feh.
Very suitable for business travelers and tourists who do not spend much time in their room. Honeymooners should choose something more romantic.
