In order to understand why I like this hotel, you should understand what I look for when I’m travelling to Germany/Europe:
• I’m ok not staying in a “US” chain
• I’m ok staying in small room
• I’m frugal, even with the company’s money
• I can’t stand paying €20 for breakfast, and would rather go down the street to a local bakery. (It helps that I’m conversant in German).
• I like walking (or taking public transportation) because you get a better feel of the city and the citizens
• I want clean and comfortable
So now let’s talk about the Design And Style (DAS) Hotel Hamburg
* Clean room – check. Small, but a flat screen, HD TV. Really liked the tile work in the bathroom. Plus the bathroom has a towel warmer.
* Clean bed – check. A little on the extra firm side. Feather comforter a plus.
* Quiet – couldn’t hear any street noises.
* WiFi – Free! Double check.
* Breakfast -- €10. Enough variation for a week. Longer and I’d go crazy.
* Friendly, English speaking staff
* 15 minute walk to work.
* 15 minute walk to Hamburg Mitte/Train station/Shopping, etc.
* 5 minute walk to/from the U-bahn stop (Lohmülenstraße)
* €65/night – check, check, check.
As others have written, lots of Turkish/Donner restaurants (plus little fruit/grocery stands) in the area, and further up the street is “technically” part of the Red Light district, but it’s totally safe to walk around.
Minor criticisms – if you want to iron your clothes, you have to bring them downstairs and iron in the luggage storage area behind the front desk. There are no tissues in the bathroom. Shampoo/Soap is the “all in one” kind. No in-room Tea/Coffee.
But the positives outweigh the minor inconveniences.
After trying 6 different hotels, this is the one that works for me right now. I'll be back.
