“A nice little hotel close to the main station”

We only stayed one night at the Norddeutscher Hof, but it turned out to be a good choice for a budget hotel in the middle of Hamburg. A bit worn maybe, but all in all a cozy little hotel with a good service. The breakfast was fine as well. And one more thing that I personally appreciate - smoking is allowed in some rooms...

We had picked this hotel because of it's location just a few minutes from the main railway station. Despite this, the neighbourhood seemed perfectly safe and friendly with many nearby restaurants and bars. Main shopping street is within walking distance.

“Good Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2007

Conveniently located by Train Station -
We liked this hotel. It was pleasant, well-located.
Price for a DB room incl. breakfast was 97 Euro a night & tax included. We stayed a 3 night and had no problems at all.
Friendly staff, good located hotel, by the Main Station or the Airport Bus. only 10 min. from the Walking Strees.

“Good, old-fashioned welcome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2007

Good, old-fashioned welcome from friendly reception staff. Cosy, quiet room. 3 minutes walk from main rail station but comfortably well-away from typical European "station-district" scene. Within walking distance of top shopping street and sightseeing. Breakfast sufficient but not sumptuous. A little expensive towards other ** hotels in the area. At the same time, this hotel wasn't advertising its rates on billboards outside front door!

“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2007

The hotel is nicely placed. If you arrive by air and take the Jasper coach service into town look out of the front or the right of the coach as you enter the centre of Hamburg you can not miss the hotel it is straight ahead of you.
On entering the hotel it smelt very much of smoke which was a bit off putting. However the lady on reception was pleasant and we were quickly on our way up in the small lift.
The family room was much better than we had imagined, there was one double bed & one single bed in the main room + a single bed in its own alcove, a hall with wardrobe & a seperate bathroom. Although we had asked for a non smoking room there was a slight smell of smoke in the room but we just opened the window.
The breakfast room was pleasant and there is now a separate non-smoking area which is at the front of the hotel so you can watch the people of Hamburg going to work.
The breakfast was okay. You always different kinds of sliced meat and cheese, selection of cereals, some canned fruit, yogurt, bread & rolls, orange apple juice.
On arriving back to the hotel in the evenings the receptionist got our children to open the chocolate advent calenders which went down well with the kids.
We had read that this could be an unsafe area and strange people hanging around but we had no problems at all. There was a Turkish grocery shop diagonally opposite the hotel which was convienient for water, coke, crisps and Turkish cakes. The area was fine and the people were the normal mixture you would see walking around any major city in the world. We always felt safe and we would stay here again.

“Conveniently located by Train Station”

We liked this hotel. It was pleasant, well-located, and worth the 92 Euro a night that we paid for a double with breakfast & tax included. We stayed a week and had no problems. The room was small with two double beds (no queen-sized bed was available), but fairly well layed out. The shower was a bit weird, set into a separate room from the main small bathroom with a second toilet. The "enclosure" for the shower was just a curtain with a drain in the common floor space. It worked fine, and the temperature was consistent.

The breakfast room was pleasant and, although there was no separate non-smoking area, was seldom smoky. Out of 7 days there was one where someone was smoking during our meal. That's pretty good odds for Germany, although since October a few smoking ordinances were just coming into force (thank goodness).

The breakfast was okay. You always had about three different kinds of sliced meat and cheese, selection of cereals, some canned fruit, yogurt, bread & rolls, orange juice and some hard-boiled eggs. This changed very little during our stay, but it was okay.

Some folks at other review sites mentioned "unsavory area and strange people". I'm guessing they were from some suburban area and don't get out much. The area was fine and the people were the usual folks walking around any major city in the world. In short, it was fine and always felt safe. I would stay here again, particularly if you appreciate good mass transit connections.
