“A tale of 4 rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

From a promising transfer at Hamburg airport onto the S1 train & then the # 2 bus from Altona station it all looked good.Allocated room 351 on the third floor and on entry into the room it was unmade & not ready, sheets & towels everywhere, went back to reception & allocated room 151 on first floor. All seemed okay so left for something to eat. Unfortunately the single beds are not very wide or long and while I am not very tall or very large it was an uncomfortable sleep as you felt you might roll & fall out of bed. Also it seemed to be just over the kitchen & there was a lot of noise from downstairs about 5.30/6.00 in the morning.

We asked to change for the second night & this was arranged to another room. However on arrival after a day of Hamburg Christmas markets this new room was not very warm and we could not get the heating to work. After 2 visits down to reception we were told there was an error on the computer & they could not get the heating to work in that room. So fourth room - back onto the first floor with nice large double bed & heating that worked !!! Hurray.

The staff were excellent each time in sorting it out. It just seemed it was us that were unfortunate in having all the trouble. The hotel itself is clean & modern apart from the small twin beds. It location is not a central as I would have liked but the bus # 3 stops outside the hotel & in 10 minutes you are at the Rathaus or main railway station. Certainly if you arrive late I would jump onto the # 3 bus and head downtown to eat as there is nowhere to eat near the hotel except for a McDonalds or a restarant called Atlas at the PhoenixHof 5 minutes walk away (get directions from the hotel desk) There is a small branch of the Nur Hier bakery chain across the road if like me your rate does not include breakfast but it does not open on Sundays but the ones in town do.

Ate at Leopolds Wirtshaus which was good & also opened late, there was not as many German restaurants as I would have liked but lots of Spanish tapas and others cuisines. There was a few German eateries also on Colonnaden near Stephenplatz metro stop. The Gruppenkarte at 9.60 euro for up to 5 people is excellent value for getting around on all HVV modes of transport availble fro purchase from the bus driver or at the station.

“Always nice hotels but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

wifi is as slow as at the Horn, so you can forget the free internet connection.... Rooms facing the street quite noisy as well. Regarding the location, no metro stop nearby so you have to catch a bus (5mn walk) to go to Altona (15mn) to get a metro. So the situation is not so good even if it is close to St Pauli and the Harbor: connections to the downtown are quite far away...

“Good hotel, convenient location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

I stayed at the NH Hamburg Altona when I attended an event at the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH). The hotel is much cheaper than the on-site hotel at CCH (Radisson), and it is just a convenient bus and train ride away. The city center and airport are both very convenient also.

The hotel condition is good, but not the most modern nor most fresh. The room and bathroom were clean, and the bed was comfortable. The staff were very friendly.

I did not have breakfast at the hotel, but there is an excellent bakery across the street from the hotel. I had some wonderful pastries and breads from the bakery.

“Good rooms, poor service in restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

The positives: my room was very clean, clearly recently renovated. The bed was slightly hard (as common in Germany) but comfortable. Check in was fast and efficient.

Breakfast was OK. Typical continental breakfast you would expect to find in a German hotel.

The negatives. We arrived around 9pm, and since the hotel is not very close to the city centre, decided to go to the hotel restaurant (which stays open until 11pm - a plus).

Unfortunately the service in the restaurant was both slow and rather poor. I waited outside for about 15 minutes to be seated (a sign asks you to wait for seating), and food arrived slowly. Worse, my colleague received his dessert before the main course.

For what it's worth, food was OK and priced about as you would expect for such a hotel.

In summary, hotel is fine if you need to stay nearby, but I would avoid the restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms are undergoing renovation currently. You want a renovated room, but take care - my colleague w...

“Too far from city centre but great breakfast!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

I spent there 3 nights during a business trip in Hamburg.
Luckily my Germans colleagues brought me to the city center with their car to have a short visit of the city, which is very nice.
The room was a single one with a great bed, pillow and duvet.
Considering that I eat only some sweets for breakfast it was exaggerate but also expensive as a common lunch.
