What a find! A truly genteel, charming, family owned hotel in a busy city – and supreme value at Euro 99 per night (single room, standard). ‘Supreme’ that is, compared to the exorbitant prices that equivalent chain hotels in the city would cost (Euro 200+). Very well located for all downtown/city attractions and exploring. I walked to and from the main station, and it took about 25 minutes.
The staff are all very helpful and spoke decent English – the gentleman at the desk on the morning I checked out was extremely kind and efficient. He helped me sort out by broken suitcase in no time at all, directing me to a good luggage shop just around the corner. I enjoyed the dining room and cleaning staff (traditional) German uniforms. Nice touch for us ‘foreigners’!
The breakfast is included and was simply outstanding – especially on the weekend when a chef is in attendance, producing pancakes, waffles and other gems. It was like ‘dining’ in a bygone era, in a wonderful dining room (lots of wood, brass and solid German fittings/fixtures). On weekdays it is all buffet style, but there was no lack of substance and choice to the breakfast, and they will cook eggs to order as well, if you don’t go for the traditional scrambled or boiled eggs.
There was 200 mB of wi-fi free per day of staying there – which is more than enough for emailing etc, so long as you don’t want to up or download big files. I found the Hamburg public transport easy (I only went on the U-bahn, didn’t try buses) and the Hamburg travel card supplied free when you check in is a most useful and thoughtful touch. I wish other cities would do similar.
I was impressed by Hamburg (for the 2 nights I spent there) and found Miniatur Wunderland (model trains) to be all it’s cracked up to be – plus lots more. Well worth the visit – just make sure you allow an entire afternoon or morning (5-6 hours) if you want to do it properly. One tip for visiting this must see attraction – book ahead on the internet, and avoid potentially long queues.
Overall – an interesting visit to Hamburg – topped off with finding this great hotel. By the way – it is a member of an association of Christian hoteliers which I think ensured a terrifically high and honest standard, and it is clear the hotel owners are not in it to profit unreasonably. I would only stay here if I were thinking of returning to Hamburg – assuming continued good reviews.
Room Tip: Ask for quiet room, at back of hotel.
