“Good atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

It was a pleasure to stay at the Baseler Hof. The location is perfect if you are heading for the opera. Close to the Alster Lake gives you a chance to go for a good walk or run. When the wather is perfect, it is such a joy. The hotel itself has a delicious breakfast buffet, very nice rooms a super service. Included in your room rate is a 3 day transportation pass. !!!

“What a find - outstanding in all ways”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

What a find! A truly genteel, charming, family owned hotel in a busy city – and supreme value at Euro 99 per night (single room, standard). ‘Supreme’ that is, compared to the exorbitant prices that equivalent chain hotels in the city would cost (Euro 200+). Very well located for all downtown/city attractions and exploring. I walked to and from the main station, and it took about 25 minutes.

The staff are all very helpful and spoke decent English – the gentleman at the desk on the morning I checked out was extremely kind and efficient. He helped me sort out by broken suitcase in no time at all, directing me to a good luggage shop just around the corner. I enjoyed the dining room and cleaning staff (traditional) German uniforms. Nice touch for us ‘foreigners’!

The breakfast is included and was simply outstanding – especially on the weekend when a chef is in attendance, producing pancakes, waffles and other gems. It was like ‘dining’ in a bygone era, in a wonderful dining room (lots of wood, brass and solid German fittings/fixtures). On weekdays it is all buffet style, but there was no lack of substance and choice to the breakfast, and they will cook eggs to order as well, if you don’t go for the traditional scrambled or boiled eggs.

There was 200 mB of wi-fi free per day of staying there – which is more than enough for emailing etc, so long as you don’t want to up or download big files. I found the Hamburg public transport easy (I only went on the U-bahn, didn’t try buses) and the Hamburg travel card supplied free when you check in is a most useful and thoughtful touch. I wish other cities would do similar.

I was impressed by Hamburg (for the 2 nights I spent there) and found Miniatur Wunderland (model trains) to be all it’s cracked up to be – plus lots more. Well worth the visit – just make sure you allow an entire afternoon or morning (5-6 hours) if you want to do it properly. One tip for visiting this must see attraction – book ahead on the internet, and avoid potentially long queues.

Overall – an interesting visit to Hamburg – topped off with finding this great hotel. By the way – it is a member of an association of Christian hoteliers which I think ensured a terrifically high and honest standard, and it is clear the hotel owners are not in it to profit unreasonably. I would only stay here if I were thinking of returning to Hamburg – assuming continued good reviews.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet room, at back of hotel.

“Small but good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

Small rooms, but everything works, the service is friendly and the hotel is normally quiet - last week some disturbances with renovation works and unnecessary fire alarms. Suits for business and leisure; located next to the railway station but also around the corner there is a walking street full of restaurants and shops and all main shopping facilities are very close.

Room Tip: Check the renovation works - inside rooms might be better.

“Friendly people, lovely room, fabulous food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2011

I had a lovely large room facing the inner part of the hotel, it was well appointed, quiet and roomy which was appreciated as I had the flu and spent 2 days in bed. The hotel staff were sympathetic, the manager fabulous. The restaurant is excellent, some of THE best chicken consommé I have ever had - as was the duck. Breakfast, built into the price is also very good. Staff are friendly and courteous. Location excellent, close to the main centre (walking distance) but quieter area. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay despite being ill. Great having tea and coffee facilities in the room - thanks for a great stay!
I do wish German hotels would provide unrestricted free internet as do most hotels around Europe

Room Tip: State requirements on booking, they will do their best to meet your needs. If any problems - ask...

“well worth the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2010

i stayed at this hotel for two nights. I agree with what others say about small rooms but overall I think this is an excellent hotel for value for money. It has character which a lot of the big chains are lacking. You can tell it is family run. And all the staff were great. I thought the service throughout was excellent starting with the very friendly welcome from the guy on reception through to the staff in the restaurant. The food was excellent in both the breakfast bar and the Klein Huis restaurant which had a nice cosy atmosphere with a log fire. The location is excellent too. My only niggle was not getting a range of toiletries in the bathroom-there were just a couple of bottles of hair/body wash so remember to take your own.
