“A positive return to Stars”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

In February we stayed at one of Stars Guesthouse apartments and were very pleased. This time my partner and I tried the guesthouse itself--the JAZZ room--and were equally satisfied. Yes, the decor is a bit dated and tacky; Celine Dion gold records are not my idea of classy style, but otherwise our room was spacious and very comfortable. In early September, we especially appreciated having a private balcony to sit out in the evenings.

A drab stucco facade hides a wonderful pre-Wars building with high ceilings and a cozy little elevator squeezed into the middle of the original central stairway. The Guesthouse shares the building with what seems to be mostly doctor and other business offices. Stars rooms vary from backpacker style with shared baths to large double rooms like ours with en suite to a multi-room apartment divided between two (or more?) floors. The website shows them all. It's a great location just a couple blocks from KaDaWe department store and the Wittenburg Platz U-bahn station. It's also just a block north of the delightful Viktoria-Louise Platz with some good restaurants surrounding a beautiful pedestrianized circle, and also a short walk through the heart of the oldest gay neighborhood to Nollendorf Platz, also with a convenient U-bahn station. [This is the neighborhood where Christopher Isherwood lived and wrote the autobiographical "Berlin Stories" which eventually became the stage musical and film "Cabaret." A bronze plaque commemorates the former boarding house where he lived.]

Minor complaints: motion-sensors control many lights, including those in the bathrooms, and you may find yourself in the dark if you don't remain active while using the toilet! A nice buffet breakfast is served in a dining room next to the main office, and if your timing is wrong, you may find yourself waiting for a place to sit. Otherwise, staff are gracious and helpful, and I suspect we will keep coming back to this convenient, comfortable and affordable guesthouse. Also, clientele is diverse... gay, straight, older, younger, singles, couples, groups. Everyone feels comfortable here.

“You really do feel like a Star!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

It’s like staying with friends in their plush apartment, and while they do all the cleaning, and put on a wholesome breakfast, you are left to enjoy yourself.
Before I arrived, I received clear directions to the place, to avoid U-Bahn line 2, which is being renovated.
During check-in, I was offered a map, and the questions I had about where I could locate the nearest supermarkets etc., were all answered easily. My arrival coincided with the 60th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall, as Olaf pointed out to me.

The reception area, and the entrance hallway have a wealth of info about recommendations for things to do, and places to eat. There are at least 3 restaurants within a 5 minute walk from the building, and I noticed that all of them had terraces, which were busy every evening. Also, I noticed that the café just next door was always busy, and so I’d like to try this next time. I think it’s called ‘X-Zeit.’
I really liked the location, it’s a peaceful area, but, which also has everything from supermarkets, late night shops, restaurants, an U-Bahn station, and frequent buses.

My room (House) had wooden floor and quite a high ceiling, but, best of all… a balcony, and so I was fortunate enough to be able to see the streets from above the trees. Also, in the distance, I could easily see the Mercedes sign atop one of the buildings in Breitscheid Platz along the Ku’Damm. I also had a good view of an electric storm early one morning. Sadly I couldn’t get any photo’s. Joint best of all was the handy sized fridge hidden in the wardrobe. I was forever topping it up with cold drinks. There was already an assortment of bottles in there but I wasn’t sure of their cost, so I just kept emptying the shelves of mineral water at Kaiser’s, and then taking all the empties back for the deposit refund.

Even though there is an U-Bahn station ‘Victoria Louise Platz’ (Line 4) an easy 5 minutes walk away, it was nice to take a 10 minute walk to ‘Wittenburg Platz’, a very photogenic station, (Lines 1,2, currently ½, and 3), and then on to the Europa Centre. Or in another direction, you can reach Nollendorf Platz U-Bahn station, with a photogenic building opposite-‘Neues Schauspielhuas’, built 1905, (for the same U-Bahn lines as Wittenburg Platz, plus the end of line 4).

A quick mention about the staff – I agree with what others have said, you know they are around, and you can ask any of them any questions, they are ALL very friendly and always eager to help by giving you as much info as they can.

I didn’t know I could have hired a laptop - next time, I won’t take my own.

I was hoping for relaxing week to include getting a fix of the fascinating German history, (politics, architecture etc.) to eat, and drink (mainly German beer) to meet some locals, to chill out, and bring home plenty of photo’s. I did all these things, and will go back as there’s always more!

Berlin Rocks!

I can’t wait to go back again, and I would certainly choose to be “Star” at ‘Stars’ !!

“Best Stay Ever!!”

my partner and i spent one week at the Stars Guesthouse (POP Room) and it by far exceeded our expectations. the room is so spacious, very clean and well equipped. the staff are very friendly and always eager to help!! the photos on the website dont lie, the place really is awesome!! the location is ideal to all amenities, its on a quiet street and very central. it has 24hr uninterruped Wi-Fi (unlike other places that we stayed in where the internet keeps cutting out) with excellent reception. the dining room is very elegant and the breakfast is delicious! taking all this into account, the price is well worth it. we were impressed from the moment we set foot into our room.

we would definately recommend this place to anyone and next time we're in Berlin, we will be staying here again for sure.

I spent 3 nights recently in this house, and I realized, its not necessary to look for many numbers of hotel stars when you are the star yourself.
Superb accommodation, nice and professional guiding for everything you need.
But - don't tell this other people, I hope to get a reservation next time.
Well working free wlan internet, individually well furnished rooms, calm surrounding despite located in the center of Berlin (near KaDeWe). You find everything as posted on the web site.

What a find! Travel info at Berlin HBH found this wonderful apartment/B&B for us and we couldn't have asked for more. Our host, Olaf Bolter, could not have been friendlier or more professional. A quiet island in a wonderful city!
