In February we stayed at one of Stars Guesthouse apartments and were very pleased. This time my partner and I tried the guesthouse itself--the JAZZ room--and were equally satisfied. Yes, the decor is a bit dated and tacky; Celine Dion gold records are not my idea of classy style, but otherwise our room was spacious and very comfortable. In early September, we especially appreciated having a private balcony to sit out in the evenings.
A drab stucco facade hides a wonderful pre-Wars building with high ceilings and a cozy little elevator squeezed into the middle of the original central stairway. The Guesthouse shares the building with what seems to be mostly doctor and other business offices. Stars rooms vary from backpacker style with shared baths to large double rooms like ours with en suite to a multi-room apartment divided between two (or more?) floors. The website shows them all. It's a great location just a couple blocks from KaDaWe department store and the Wittenburg Platz U-bahn station. It's also just a block north of the delightful Viktoria-Louise Platz with some good restaurants surrounding a beautiful pedestrianized circle, and also a short walk through the heart of the oldest gay neighborhood to Nollendorf Platz, also with a convenient U-bahn station. [This is the neighborhood where Christopher Isherwood lived and wrote the autobiographical "Berlin Stories" which eventually became the stage musical and film "Cabaret." A bronze plaque commemorates the former boarding house where he lived.]
Minor complaints: motion-sensors control many lights, including those in the bathrooms, and you may find yourself in the dark if you don't remain active while using the toilet! A nice buffet breakfast is served in a dining room next to the main office, and if your timing is wrong, you may find yourself waiting for a place to sit. Otherwise, staff are gracious and helpful, and I suspect we will keep coming back to this convenient, comfortable and affordable guesthouse. Also, clientele is diverse... gay, straight, older, younger, singles, couples, groups. Everyone feels comfortable here.
