We had a room in the Maritim Hotel Berlin for 4 nights in May 2010. This is hands-down the classiest hotel we have ever stayed in. One is immediately hit by the glittery lobby, but the attractiveness of this hotel extends far beyond that.
All of the staff who we encountered speak English very well, and – from the desk clerks to the concierge – go out of their way to be helpful. The rooms are large, well-appointed, and quiet. The hotel is in Berlin’s Diplomatic Quarter on a quiet side street a couple blocks south of Tiergarten; we heard no street noise inside the room, nor did we hear anyone in adjoining rooms. And the breakfast bar is to die for. There is a cook who will prepare eggs or omelets any way you’d like them along with bacon, sausage, etc. – but, beyond that, there is an extensive array of breads, fruits, yogurts, cold cuts, etc. etc., beyond anything we’ve ever seen (including some items we didn’t even recognize). Because this hotel must cater to visitors to the various foreign embassies that are nearby, it clearly carries breakfast foods that would appeal to a variety of nationalities. The breakfast wait staff are quite attentive.
We cannot comment on the cost of the rooms and breakfast bar. We were on a tour that reserved this hotel for us, and we don’t know what room rate the tour paid. But it was a moderately priced tour, so I doubt that the rate was through the roof.
The nearest U-Bahn station is in Potsdamer Platz, which is perhaps a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hotel. U-Bahn stations are fairly widely spaced in much of Berlin, so I’d doubt that many Berlin hotels in quiet parts of the city would be much closer to a station than that. Some of the other major Berlin attractions – such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, and Checkpoint Charlie – are only 5 to 10 minutes beyond Potsdamer Platz, so we found it quite convenient to walk from the hotel to many of the sites we wanted to see. There was also a line of taxis constantly available, if one needed to travel by cab.
If you’re staying in Berlin, we would strongly recommend that you consider the Maritim Hotel, if you can get an affordable rate. Five stars!
