“Avoid at all costs! What is offered on webpage is not true!”

A friend and I both booked for 7 nights at the last minute and payed up front with Paypal. We booked 2 rooms costing 560 euros. When we arrived we were taken not to the advertised address but around the corner to another building up on the 2nd floor. When we entered we asked where the kitchen, bathrooms etc were. We were told that there was NO kitchen and NO breakfast included as what was clearly advertised on their website and in their T&C and FAQ. There was not even a kettle, cups or glasses in rooms. Because of the time that we came to Berlin there wasnt any other places to stay. This is NOT a GAY B&B! What this really is, is a Private flat that is rented out on a room by room basis. The bathroom as per the website says it is cleaned and checked afew times a day. NOT TRUE!! It was dirty, with No hot water alot of the time, and on occassions we had to buy our own toilet paper. The rooms were never cleaned, bins emptied, fresh towels never supplied nor in our 7 day stay was the sheets changed. When I spoke to the ??cleaner he just wasnt interested at all. He couldnt even tell us where a laundry mat was in the area. The area was very noisy on a main road, even with the double glazing. Each room has a door with glass in it and not all have cardboard over it which means that if you have company people can come upto your door and peer in. Not Good! The beds are NOT comfortable and my friend ended up putting his mattress on the floor as the bed was so uncomfortable. There is only 1 pillow provided in double rooms and is old, smelly and totally useless as it flat! There is also No fire alarms anywhere in property nor another way to get out in an Emergency! The area its self has 2 cafes/shops, But is a bus and a train away from the Gay Areas Of Berlin. I know that we didnt pay that much and as the saying goes "' you pay for what you get" but had we planned it and gotten our money back we would have gone else. Even if I could have stayed here for FREE I wouldnt have! Avoid at ALL costs! 2 other male guests stayed during our stay and both left before they were due to checkout so I know its not just us being over fussy.

“AVOID”

The guy running/cleaning the place is an absolute Hitler.

At the time, no hot water was available. when contacting the Chinese guy cleaning the place, he was extremely rude, shouting in violent broken English: 'You don't like, you get out'.

There was NO kitchen available. and absolutely no explanation why. The Chinese guy just decided to not make the kitchen available to guests which is absolutely unacceptable for a 'Bed & Breakfast'.

So. No breakfast, no internet, no hot water - just a cold room in the middle of nowhere. No room service, if you don't bring your own bed sheets/towels, this will not get changed for 4 or 5 days.

The Chinese guy is completely out of touch with a normal guest. How can he expect or demand guests to urinate in the bathroom sitting down like a woman? This is example of him imposing HIS views on guests.

Another example, you have to use these old, sweaty slippers that god knows how many other people have used. I used my own, because i was not going to risk getting fungal infection.

The guy ENTERS your room whilst you are out, checking things like your toilet roll and stuff. ! (came back one day to find my stuff had been gone through and notes left by the Landlord telling me what i should or shouldn't do) - Absolutely Unacceptable!

Overall, very very bad experience. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere - 4 miles out of town. It is NOT a hotel, or a BED and Breakfast, it is a Room rented out.

Absolutely unacceptably poor standard.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE !

“Mediocre...”

(+) Rooms were quite large and spacious, quite old but clean.
Breakfast was sufficient, did not have any problems running out of things like other reviewers mentioned , but maybe this is because of the fact that we were the only people in the entire floor during our entire stay (8 nights)
Price was rational

(-) Location. you need to change at least two different means of transportation to go anywhere, sometimes even three.
The fact that we were the only ones n the entire floor.. although at their site it is mentioned, that they are always fully booked..
The fact that they ask you at least 50% of the total amount in advance or even more.. and if you don't like it at the end or change your mind? proper hotels usually only charge you one night in advance..
They require an extra 12 euros if you arrive later than the check in hours.ok, fair enough. but the owner sent us an SMS while being on our way there that he is no longer waiting for us and that he was leaving, cause it was late (almost 1 o' clock after midnight), athough he had already been informed about the arrival time in our booking e-mail and of course we had paid the extra amount. When we finally arrived and managed to find him (quite shocked cause we thought we might have to stay out in the street..), we were tired of the trip and the plane delay and last thing we needed was a lecture in a very unfriendly tone that "we should have taken a taxi there from the airport instead of the night bus, it should not have taken us so long and after all we arrived there with easy jet which is a cheap company, so we could give the money to a taxi". great welcome huh? and why on earth did we pay the extra money for him to wait for us?
finally we realised that he had confused our arrival time, cause he said that he had been tired and upset waiting since 21.30, but our arrival time was 01.00, a mistake which of course he never admitted...
so, the behavior was totally unacceptable..

“Highly Recommend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2008

Staying at Gaybed was a great part of my trip; I was advised on places to go, things to see, bars to check out and more.

The staff/owners were extremely kind, and it felt as if i had a personal concierge at checkin.

I highly recommend this B&B and will definitely book again.

“Good location and value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2007

PROS:
- Good price
- Large bedroom with table and chair. Cabinet and hanger are available. Our room has a window facing a small garden.
- Decent breakfast. Bread, fruit jam, nutella (chocolate-peanut jam), tea, coffee, milk, cheese, all self-service. No microwave and dishwasher. Hand-wash everything after use.
- Good location: 5 minutes by Bus 123 to hauptbahnhof (main train station), or 12 EUR by taxi from Berlin/Tegel TXL airport especially if you have extra-large luggage.
- Walking distance to java-cafe serving Indonesian food and kebab as well as inexpensive German beer.

CONS:
- Payment is expected before checking in. We paid by Paypal 2 months before. No cancellation is allowed.
- No elevators. We have to lift our big luggages to 3rd floor.
- One bathroom/toilet is shared by 3 bedrooms. Bathroom is too small.
- A picture above toilet suggesting male guests to urinate like women (by sitting on the toilet bowl). Sorry, I always urinate in the standing position.
- There is a rule to enter bathroom with the provided slippers. Sometimes I need to use the bathroom for a short period (brushing teeth, washing hands etc) and should not be forced to change slippers.
- Towel is too rough on skin. We, from USA, always add fabric softener at the end of washing cycle.

Despite of those CONS, we enjoyed staying at this place. The owner is friendly and helpful. We'd recommend this place to our friends.
