“A quiet hotel in a vibrant part of Berlin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

We stayed in the hotel late September for three nights. Room was adequate with sufficient wardrobe space, small bathroom (no bath) and smaller lounge with sofa bed. Main bed was large and comfortable (firm mattress). Despite the double glazing, August Strasse could be a little noisy until the early hours (particularly on a Monday of all days) with revellers going home, so as others have said, a court yard facing room might be a good bet.

The location is very handy for walking to most of the (first timer’s) main tourist sights Museum Island, Reichstag, Alexander Platz, Frederickstrasse, Dom, DDR Museum, Holocaust Denkmal etc as well as exploration of the immediate local area around Oranienburg Tor, Neue Synagogue, Gross Hamburger Strasse etc.

The hotel has connections with religious organisations and is used by church groups. However you wouldn’t notice this (unless you look VERY closely!)

One thing we weren’t quite prepared for is the size of Berlin – nine times bigger than Paris and with the Tiergarten alone being bigger than New York’s Central Park! S- and U-Bahn journeys are very reasonably priced, the machines easy to use and the network vast. Free maps are available from the tourist information desk at the airport.

The area is full of restaurants and not far away are small art galleries.

The reception staff were in the main very helpful.

“Perfect for a short stay in Berlin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

Comfortable, clean, quiet, well-run hotel in central Berlin. Five minutes walk from S-Bahn Oranienburgerstrasse in one direction or U-Bahn Oranienburger Tor in the other, one change for Airport train. E6.50 gets you into town from the airport and all day on the fantastic public transport system. Friendly, helpful staff, spacious, comfortable room, good shower. BBC World & CNN in Enlglish on TV. Affordable mini-bar. Quiet street (Some road works outside but no noise - good insulation). Plenty to eat for breakfast. Lots of good cafes and restaurants nearby. Walking distance to museum quarter. Very pleased overall with this hotel, ideal retreat after a busy day exploring Berlin.

“Great location, warm hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2009

We spent a night and would have liked to have stayed another. The hotel is charming, small, warm, and great value. It's near all the places you want to go and staff are helpful and friendly. Good breakfast included.

“Great location and friendly helpful staff”

Me and two friends stayed at Hotel Augustinenhof for a long weekend in November. The hotel staff were helpful even before we arrived by dealing with my room queries beforehand via email (in English) and then accomodating a last minute change of plans when a triple room was required.

We arrived too early in the morning to get to our rooms, but our bags were kept securely while we went off to discover Berlin. The hotel is in the Mitte district of former East-Berlin, which meant that it had more character and a youthful, alternative feel to it. On many corners were cafe's that turned into bars in the evening allowing for long, late slow drinking and eating. The area felt safe and friendly.

Our room was spacious, clean, new looking and very quiet (even with building work happening across the road). The TV had no English speaking channels, but who cares. Breakfast was a mixture of continental and cooked food and served until 10am. We didn't eat dinner there as there are many other places to eat in the area. Staff were always friendly and spoke excellent English - they even posted me an undeveloped camera film that we had left in the room - I suspect most hotels wouldn't have bothered.

If you are looking for a clean, friendly, good value (£30 pp per night) hotel in an interesting area of Berlin, near the U-Bahn - you should give the Hotel Augustinenhof serious consideration.

  • Liked — New, clean rooms, friendly English speaking staff.
  • Disliked — Nothing.
  • Tips/Secrets — Drink Hefeweizen- it's gorgeous.
