We stayed in the hotel late September for three nights. Room was adequate with sufficient wardrobe space, small bathroom (no bath) and smaller lounge with sofa bed. Main bed was large and comfortable (firm mattress). Despite the double glazing, August Strasse could be a little noisy until the early hours (particularly on a Monday of all days) with revellers going home, so as others have said, a court yard facing room might be a good bet.
The location is very handy for walking to most of the (first timer’s) main tourist sights Museum Island, Reichstag, Alexander Platz, Frederickstrasse, Dom, DDR Museum, Holocaust Denkmal etc as well as exploration of the immediate local area around Oranienburg Tor, Neue Synagogue, Gross Hamburger Strasse etc.
The hotel has connections with religious organisations and is used by church groups. However you wouldn’t notice this (unless you look VERY closely!)
One thing we weren’t quite prepared for is the size of Berlin – nine times bigger than Paris and with the Tiergarten alone being bigger than New York’s Central Park! S- and U-Bahn journeys are very reasonably priced, the machines easy to use and the network vast. Free maps are available from the tourist information desk at the airport.
The area is full of restaurants and not far away are small art galleries.
The reception staff were in the main very helpful.
