I stayed at the Park Inn Alexanderplatz for a conference in December 2011. This hotel's location was incredibly convenient. It is literally right in the center of Alexanderplatz, which means plenty of shops, restaurants, and sights are right outside your door. The view of the Fernsehturm (Berlin's TV Tower) from my room was not to be believed, and I did not even pay extra for a higher room.
The service of the hotel staff was great. There were a few minor problems with my room - the heater was stuck on high and at some point a fuse blew and the power outlets stopped working - but each time a staff member was sent up and fixed the problem with no delay.
Everything was very clean. Check-in was a breeze, but check-out took a long time due to the line. I don't think there is much the hotel can do about this, they were all working very quickly and just got rushed by a group of people I suppose. The food I ate at the hotel restaurant on the first floor was quite good, if a bit expensive for Berlin.
The only downside to the Park Inn is the rather peculiar layout of its rooms. The double bed in mine was just two single mattresses pushed together, which wasn't the most comfortable arrangement. The desk area near my window was pretty cramped.
The most interesting aspect of the room by far was the bathroom setup. There is no separation between the bathing area and the sleeping area. The toilet was in a small closet by itself right by the door, and the sink was right next to my bed. A glass-walled shower stall stood in between, so you can see right in to the shower from anywhere in the room. Either book separate rooms for everyone you're traveling with, or be prepared to get a lot more intimate with your travel companions.
