From January 9 to 16 I spent an interesting time touring Berlin - and am very glad I stayed at the Residenz. For a stay like this, on my own, it was perfect - priced reasonably, excellent location and a comfortable "home away from home". The staff is great - personable and very helpful. My room was comfortable, warm, and the high ceiling made an atmosphere of space and privacy. One problem, and quite common throughout Europe, is the lack of light - the bedside lights and those beside the desk and the sitting area were not sufficient to light the whole room.
Don't count on the wireless - the reception was infrequent and when connected it was very slow. However ADSL is available in the room. The Business Centre has a computer with fast access and a printer, but no possibility of connecting vis USB.
For English speakers without German - the only TV available is BBC World and CNN.
The IHT is available in the lounge area.
There is a full supermarket across the street - good idea to get bottled water, etc.
City Circle bus tour (hop on hop off) is at the corner - good idea for the first two days (ticket good for 2 days).
Berlin Info is across Koo-Dam in the walkway - place to get your Welcome Card etc.
Great Indian Restaurant (Spice of India) only 3 minute walk away - across the street are two good Italian places and on the same side are 3 German Restaurants.
