We stayed at Schloss Steinburg for only one night. It is a very lovely place and the food was divine. However, it was the most expensive room we booked on our entire trip through Germany, and ended up being one of our least favorites.
Please note: There is really nothing wrong with this hotel and it's certainly lovely. If just knowing you're in a "castle" and having a nice restaurant makes a stay great for you, then you'll love it. Personally, I didn't have the kind of experience that made me feel it was worth the high price we paid. And it wasn't really the kind of "castle" one might expect. More like a larger stone mansion.
The room was just lovely (you can see in our photos) and the view was outstanding. I believe our room number was 22, though I'm not positive. It was a small room. We could see on the fire exit map that most other rooms on our floor were larger, so that was disappointing. Except for the pretty room and the fact that it was in a "castle", the stay was fairly mediocre.
While the room was cute, it was small and the bathroom and shower were very tiny. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and squeaked very loudly if you moved even a little bit, and our window wouldn't shut all the way (off a hinge) - so the sounds of the wind and trains below the hotel were a bit annoying. The outside light that shines into some of the windows shouldn't really be an issue, as the windows are equipped with outer darkening blinds that work excellently. Our room was equipped with a mini-bar fridge, filled mostly with alcohol.
The staff was sufficiently friendly and polite, but the reception staff was a bit on the snobby side and we weren't made to feel particularly welcome. Also, our room was not ready when we arrived.
We were shown the way to the pool when we checked in (through a series of rooms and hallways), but when we attempted to use it later we discovered that, in order to get there, we had to walk through a meeting room packed with businessmen in suits. Not really something you want to do dressed in a robe, so we didn't go.
NOTE! There is no elevator (or at least, we weren't shown one and didn't see one). If you are not in excellent shape, request a ground or low-floor room. Ours required quite an exhausting hike to reach, which is not fun when you're hauling your suitcases.
THE FOOD WAS DIVINE! We had lunch on the patio and really enjoyed the dishes and the service. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food, again, was five-star. HOWEVER - after finishing our starters, while waiting for our main courses to arrive, the staff cleared our table. Apparently they had forgotten our main courses. After sitting at the empty table for about 20 minutes, finally a waitress came up and asked if there would be anything else. When we said yes, we're waiting for our meals she looked horrified and extremely embarrassed. They quickly re-set our table with utensils and our food arrived after a bit of a wait. It was worth the wait, though. It was delicious.
LOCATION: The view is outstanding as it is up on a hill overlooking the town. So, that means you really aren't near town and can't really walk into town from this location. Not a complaint, just something you should bear that in mind as you're planning your trip.
As I said before, it's a lovely place and there's nothing really wrong with it. However, I wouldn't stay again as I don't feel it's worth the price. But that is just me. You're paying for the fact that it's in a castle, really.
