We booked into Rothenburg on our journey down to Bavaria so that our young daughter didn't have a 9-hour car trip. We randomly selected the "Akzent Hotel Gasthaus Schranne" (to give it its full title) after trying to find a hotel with free car parking.
On getting to the medieval walled city I didn't think we would be able to drive in as the roads looked so narrow - but I was assured that we could and so made our way in through the gates. After a couple of missed turnings down scarily narrow streets a large square opened up with lots of parking and the hotel was located at the top (30 seconds walk - if that). If wasn't totally free - if we had stayed beyond 10 am we would have had to pay a Euro - but getting there after 4pm it was free.
The hotel was in a lovely location, less than a minute from the wall (that you can climb and walk around the city). The room was spotless and character filled (I guess - I just mean not modern). The bathroom was quite small - but totally satisfactory. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. We would stay again if we happened to be in that part of the world...
I recently spent two nights at the Schranne Hotel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany. The hotel is conveniently located a few short blocks from the town center and all of the restaurants, shops, and historical sites there.
My room was a single and was fine. The configuration of the room was a bit unusual with the shower and sink right in the main room and the WC on the opposite end of the room. Despite its unusual set-up, the room was clean, the bed fine, the cable TV had a variety of channels, and the overall level of comfort was good.
One irritating thing about the Shranne was the 6 euro fee for 48 hours of internet use. This was the only hotel in my two week tour of Europe that required me to pay for wifi. In this day and age, internet should be included in every hotel stay free of charge.
One thing all visitors to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany should experience is the Night Watchman's Walking Tour. The tour is informative and VERY entertaining. Well worth the few euros spent. It leaves at 8:00 each night from the center town square. You don't want to miss this!
We booked this hotel on my son's recommendation with only a few days notice. What a jewel. Drove to the hotel and parked in the back, had to go through the kitchen to the front desk and what a wonderfully clean kitchen. We were taken to our room, shown how to operate lights etc. Then outside to enjoy the afternoon and beer.
Very good value for money, own car park which is great for Rothenburg which has very restricted parking. Great position within the old town, helpful friendly staff, very claen and well recommended.
