We recently stayed here for a night in order to visit King Ludwig's castles nearby. Our primary reason for choosing the Hotel Bergruh was the fact that they advertised on their website that they have a sauna and quaint Bavarian décor, neither of which turned out to be completely true. Here are the key points from our stay:
1. Décor: Hotel Bergruh’s dining room was charmingly decorated with knotted pine furniture and Bavarian fabric but the rest of the hotel had a very austere, rather plain atmosphere. This is a German “sports hotel” meaning that the emphasis is on fitness. Our room had stark white walls and lone small picture. It definitely did not have any coziness or charm such as the rooms featured on their website.
2. No Sauna: When we inquired at the Front Desk about the sauna, we were told in an abrupt manner that it was “closed and under renovation”. There was a nice pool, as my photo shows, but we were not really in the mood to go swimming.
3. Service: The Front Desk lady was not especially friendly or helpful. When we asked if we could borrow an electricity adapter, we were told “there is none”. There was a sign at the Front Desk admonishing visitors “Do not pet the dogs”. When we asked how to get to Neuschwanstein from there, she pointed to a map taped on the wall. However, I do want to mention that our waiter at dinner and breakfast was very nice.
4. Location: We stayed at Hotel Bergruh on a snowy November night which was probably not the ideal time to visit. The hotel was located on a steep hill above a lake and as such, would probably be better suited to summertime activities.
5. Price: Their advertised price for a double room during the time we were there was 132 euros incl. breakfast. Since I booked at short notice, I asked if they could offer us a cheaper rate. They agreed to give us a double room/ breakfast for 119 euros which, in hindsight, was too expensive for what we got in return. We could have stayed at the Hotel Lisl in Hohenschwangau for 47 euros/night and given our objectives for being in the region, that would have been a much, much better choice.
You live and learn…….
