“Average hotel, website photos are misleading”

We recently stayed here for a night in order to visit King Ludwig's castles nearby. Our primary reason for choosing the Hotel Bergruh was the fact that they advertised on their website that they have a sauna and quaint Bavarian décor, neither of which turned out to be completely true. Here are the key points from our stay:

1. Décor: Hotel Bergruh’s dining room was charmingly decorated with knotted pine furniture and Bavarian fabric but the rest of the hotel had a very austere, rather plain atmosphere. This is a German “sports hotel” meaning that the emphasis is on fitness. Our room had stark white walls and lone small picture. It definitely did not have any coziness or charm such as the rooms featured on their website.

2. No Sauna: When we inquired at the Front Desk about the sauna, we were told in an abrupt manner that it was “closed and under renovation”. There was a nice pool, as my photo shows, but we were not really in the mood to go swimming.

3. Service: The Front Desk lady was not especially friendly or helpful. When we asked if we could borrow an electricity adapter, we were told “there is none”. There was a sign at the Front Desk admonishing visitors “Do not pet the dogs”. When we asked how to get to Neuschwanstein from there, she pointed to a map taped on the wall. However, I do want to mention that our waiter at dinner and breakfast was very nice.

4. Location: We stayed at Hotel Bergruh on a snowy November night which was probably not the ideal time to visit. The hotel was located on a steep hill above a lake and as such, would probably be better suited to summertime activities.

5. Price: Their advertised price for a double room during the time we were there was 132 euros incl. breakfast. Since I booked at short notice, I asked if they could offer us a cheaper rate. They agreed to give us a double room/ breakfast for 119 euros which, in hindsight, was too expensive for what we got in return. We could have stayed at the Hotel Lisl in Hohenschwangau for 47 euros/night and given our objectives for being in the region, that would have been a much, much better choice.

You live and learn…….

“not 4 stars anymore”

We spent two nights in Hotel Bergruh this November.
I must admit that their website is a masterpiece of photography, congratulations. But in reality the hotel is rather outdated.

The personnel keep trying to be nice, but apparently the waiters in the restaurant need some more training (also of their English). On the other hand, they smoothly arranged for us a booking of tictets to the Neuschwanstein Castle and the booking slip awaited for us upon the arrival (the other hotel in the area I was considering to stay at, said that this is not possible to be arranged).

The food is acceptable - both in terms of quality and quantity, but nothing great. Very limited salad bar at the dinner. Breakfast just ok.

Wellness facilities - quite big pool, but the rest (saunas, silent room) very, very small and crowded. At their website they show the pool area nicely illuminated with the candles. Right, the candles are there, but during the two afternoons we spent there, they did not light them...

I would say that this is 3 star place and if someone needs the 4 star quality, should go somewhere else.

“Great Mountain Hotel”

We had a double room for two nights. We wanted a place close to the castles, but not in the heart of Fuessen. The views were great. We were greeted with a glass of wine on arrival. Breakfast was a great buffett, and the dining options were great. The staff was very attentive, although a bit limited with English. If you are looking for a beautiful, relaxing place to stay, this would be a great location. We didn't use any of the spa services, but the pool and saunas looked very nice.

“Wow!! Wonderful Resort, Wonderful Views, Wonderful Staff!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

The hotel was located on top of a large hill, across the road from a lake, which some of the rooms overlooked. The decoration in the hotel was very Bavarian, until you went down to the spa, which was just plain luxurious. Everyone smiled, was helpful in the extreme and made us feel very welcome despite a miscommunication (my fault entirely) which we benefited from (they gave us sekt and apple juice while we waited). The rooms were beautifuly done. Well there was one large flower decoration in our room that reminded me of a funeral home addition, but besides that we had a fantastic time. They even decorated a large table (there were 7 of us total) for a very great dinner since we happened to be staying on my birthday. Fussen is beautiful and the hotel was well worth the stay. Everyone in the family was happy with the accomodations, area and hospitality. Even the spa/massage aspect was fantastic!! Highly recommended!

“Exactly what you're looking for”

We were driving through Bavaria following the romantic road and for our start in Fussen I picked this place which turned out to be my fiance's favorite of our trip. There is a great patio that overlooks the lake where you can eat or have your welcome drink. Our room overlooked the lake and had a nice deck. Parking is fine if you're there early - I would not want to show up at night as the turnoff for the hotel is not marked and the steep nearby roads would not lend themselves to easy parking. Hotel pool is really nice if small as you would expect. Internet station is fine but it's right at the front desk and if it had print capability I didn't see it. Wireless they do have but it's really spotty and chances are that it will not work in your room. I found the best reception outside of one person's room which raised some eyebrows when the guy came out with his wife.

Food was ok, not great. Dinner was better than breakfast. Breakfast spread is extensive if not spectacular.

Great base for exploring the castles - highly recommend avoiding the craziness of fussen proper which is ridiculous.
