This is our third time at this hotel, and I would easily recommend to anyone, either business or pleasure, with car or without. We stayed 6 nights in October 2011 (after Octoberfest)
1) The rooms are standard Novotel, clean, reasonable size, and all the amenities. As well, all the rooms are quiet, even those facing the neighboring mall.
2) Price - A few other reviews suggest prices that don't seem reasonable. Maybe if it was Octoberfest, and a last minute booking, but a quick review outside of that event time will find prices anywhere between 100USD/CAD (75EUR) and 200USD/CAD (150EUR). A bit of planning can get you to the lower end of that fairly easily. Compared to other European cities, this is really good value.
3) Location - no, its not near the airport. Neither is anything else, except farmers. For those who have not been to Munich, Franz Joseph (MUC) is in a different timezone. (kidding). The airport is WAY out there. Great, in that you rarely hear flights across the city, but no matter what hotel you book (save the airport Novotel), you are going to fork out some money for a taxi. I was renting a car (you can find free parking in the area), and others have commented on S/Ubahn methods of getting there. By car, its right beside an major motorway (94) and is very easy to find.
As others have said, its right on top of a train station, so its fairly easy to use public transportation to get downtown. By car, no matter what time we travelled, it was about 10 - 15 minutes from central Munich to the hotel.
4) Area - as others have said, there is a mall beside the hotel, with a couple of good restaurants, plus Edeka (a food store). Very easy to purchase a good sandwich, a beer, and some other tidbits for lunch at the mall, or to take with you downtown.
Our only real complaint was that the wireless in the rooms was poor.
Overall, excellent value, typically good Novotel quality and cleanliness. For anyone on a driving tour around Germany/Europe, this is a good hotel to consider.
