The Pension Schmellergarten is located 2 blocks from the Poccistrasse subway stop on the U-3 or U-6 line. From the Hauptbahnhof take U-1 (towards Mangfallplatz) or U-2 (towards Messestadt Ost) 1 stop to Sendlinger Tor. Change to the U-3 (towards Furstenried West) or the U-6 (towards Klinkum Grosshadern). Poccistrasse is 2 stops after Sendlinger Tor. The pension is located at 20 Schmellerstrasse, in a pleasant residential neigborhood. We felt very safe walking in the area late at night. There is a large yellow sign identifying the hotel. Entrance is on the side. You will need to climb a flight of stairs to reach a small office area on the second floor. Upon arrival you will be greeted by a friendly manager. The rooms are small by American standards, but quite sufficient and very clean. Bathrooms, at least on our floor, are shared. The breakfast room is sunny and cheerfully decorated. Breakfast was typical, containing juice, hard boiled eggs, pastrys etc. The espresso was very good .As this was a traditional pension, we were not suprised that the managers 4 year old son and their friendly dog were present in the public areas. Both child and dog are well behaved. We enjoyed their company but guests who are not comfortable around young children or animals might have some reservations. We paid E52 nightly during the off season in February. This was an excellent value. We were able to leave our luggage on the day of our departure and collect it before catching an evening train. We will definitely stay there again on our next trip to Munich.

The hotel is located in a calm residential district. The station of 2 underground lines is reachable within 3 minutes. City centre is only 3 stations away.
We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights in twin-bed room. The room was simple but practical. Do not expect a design pearl, rathet guest room in a house of your friends. But everything was clear and not looking worn. 2 shared toilets and showers on floor were also clean. WiFi connection was available.
The breakfast room looks the best and the offer was really excellent, comparable with a much higher-class hotel.
Generally, if you are looking for budget stay in Munchen, it is highly recommended.

Great place, I'd absolutely recommend it for budget travellers. I got a single bedroom with private bathroom for 40 Euros including very nice breakfast buffet. Very clean (other than my pillow!) and it is only 2 stops from City Center by the U-Bahn (underground).
Free WiFi, staff are very friendly and they let me use the internet to check in online and printed my boarding pass for free !!

This place is an option or those traveling on a budget (us), or making last minute reservations (us) during Octoberfest. This hotel is more like a dorm or a hostel, ideal for those who are low maintenance and who require only the basic necessities. Good for college kids and backpackers.

It's a two story building with rooms that resemble cells on both floors. Each room is clean and has a window, an old fashioned sink, an old TV (one of those with a knob for channel switcher), and a bed that takes up most of the space in the room. The sheets are clean.

Bathrooms on each floor are communal and shared by all the guests on that floor (maybe total of 5 rooms).

Shower is only the second floor and is shared by all the guests in the hotel (you should time your shower). Often we ran into people wrapped in towels running back to their rooms.

The breakfast area on the second floor is much more charming than the hotel. Excellent food, clean vintage china. The room is well lit with natural light coming in from the windows.

Location is key as it is located 10 minutes walking from Octoberfest. Also about 20 minute walk from the main trainstation from which we walked at about 10 pm at night with no problems. Also, walking distance from all the downtown scenery including the Brauhouse. It is safe.

Above all, this place is clean, no insects, no rodents, tolerable for a few nights stay while visiting Octoberfest and Munich.
