The staff are very friendly, but that's about it... I live right next door to the Opéra in a huge city apartment that does not have a guest room, though! That's why I usually accomodate my visitors in a hotel room. We've tried the Opéra once, twice and for the very last time in July 2010.
I would never accomodate someoene there again. The owner of the Opéra is the same as of the Restaurant Gandl next door. He inherited the hotel and the restaurant. All he does is to take the money out but not to invest a cent in either the hotel or the restaurant. We've been through quite a few rooms at the Opéra. You will not find a single room that is in good shape. The fabrics and wallpapers in the "lobby" and rooms are all old and worn down. The mirrors all have cracks. The bathrooms urgently need renovation. Also, the entire house is clairaudient as can be. When someone walks in the hallway or shuts a door even quietly, you can hear every step or movement. There is no aircon and in the summer and it gets really hot and sticky in the rooms.
My last visitor was supposed to stay for three nights and moved out after one night. She was on the same floor with an Arabic family with little children who rented five rooms on that floor. The doors were slammed all day by the little children. They kept on running up and down the hallway, sreaming and playing. We complained at the front desk. They did nothing.
At least they let my visitor move out after the first night and didn't charge the second and third booked night.
The Opéra charges for a single really small, uncharming room about 190 Euros/night. It's overpriced as can be for what it is. Obviously the have not understood that there are small brand new hotels in an even better location (down-down-town) that charge between 160-220 Euros and that are well maintained. Try the Cortiina (double ii) or the Louis Hotel. They are both stylish and fine. They promise big and deliver big. If you are on a smaller budget try the Adria Hotel around the corner from the Opéra. It's only a three star and you can get it for about a 100 Euros but they are halfway modern and extremely nice. The Opéra is just a run down ramshackle hut and the owner doesn't know what the word "investing" means.
