“What a pleasant surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2007

We stayed at Hotel Senfelder for the Bank Holiday weekend in May and were very happy overall. Living in London, and travelling most weekends, we tend to go for cheap hotels and have had some shockers, so we weren't expecting much for the price and got a real surprise. It was definately value for money - the rooms were pretty big and very clean. For a budget hotel they were very comfortable indeed. The only complaint was that it was very hot! It was around 32 degrees during the day and the room had no fans or aircon and seemed to hold the heat very well so we were quite warm. It was also on a street dominated with backpacker hostels so could get a bit noisy but much quieter than you would expect for that location.

Location was FANTASTIC!! As it was near the hostels, tours left from right outside the hotel! It was right next to the main train station and so easy to get anywhere by foot or train - we couldn't have had a better location.

The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast selection was great.

A simple, no-frills hotel but very clean, comfortable and friendly and you just couldn't beat the fab location. Would definately stay there again.

“good location close to train station”

The Senefelder is a very clean but simple style of accommodation.
Being directly across the road from the train station and walking distance to all the main tourist sights is its best feature.
Our triple room was very large with three single beds, each with one pillow and a doona. There were no extra blankets or pillows. The floor was tiled with 2 large persian type rugs. There was a small alcove with a table and 2 chairs. In a cupboard to the side was a small television, which due to wall partitions was impossible to see from the bedroom area. The bathroom had a large bath with a hand held type shower but no shower screen or curtain which made not getting water every where quite a tricky feat. There were no tea and coofee making facilities but there were vending machines at the front desk. The elevator was very small. The lighting was not really sufficient if wanting to read tourist books or write a journal. Our room overlooked a back street which wasn't very interesting until it was home time for the workers or when the garbage trucks passed through. You have to leave your key at the front desk whenever you leave the premises. The internet access is not as up to date as perhaps it should be but it is free to guests.
The rooms are serviced daily for towels but not linen.
The hot breakfast is a boiled egg & tea or coffee........ the buffet part is very good with fresh rolls, cereal, cold meats, cheeses, salads, fresh fruit , yoghurt etc.
Now my review probably doesn't portray the Senefelder as the best hotel however we had a fabulous stay. The staff were very friendly and knew us all even after such a short stay. The ladies at breakfast were gorgeous so much so we gave one a koala for looking after us so well.
We could walk to everything that we wanted to see, the Beer Gardens, The shopping centres, the glockenspiel tower.....The museum and the main bus stop for the tours was just across the road. From the train station (as long as you come out of the right exit) it is simply across the road and a few metres down a side street. It is not at all noisy despite the traffic. There is a reasonable Italian Restaurant right next door. About 5 mins walk is a shopping centre with a supermarket, bakery etc. There are several underground walkways that also link back to this area due to the hotels proximity to the rail station. Getting around couldn't have been easier. It was very clean and has a family feel. If travelling independently by train in Europe I can recommend this hotel for its convenience and value for money.

“Clean, simple, roomy, great location”

This hotel is in a great position beside the main railway station, 5 mins walk to the Karlsplatz (city centre) and 5 mins walk (10 min stagger) from the Oktoberfest grounds. The parade even passes by at the bottom of Senefelder Strasse. The hotel is a basic 2/3 star job but is impeccably clean. Rooms were larger than normal and the shower was excellent (no aircon though). Breakfast was fine too. Area around hotel includes various "erotic" bars but security is excellent - you can wander about as drunk as a lord until 4:00 a.m. but will come to no harm (unless you fall over on your own).

I have only one complaint - get a room away from the street - the hotels/hostels across the road are a huge source of noise until 4:00 a.m. Then the beer trucks start deliveries and at 5:00 a.m. the street cleaning starts. Finally fall asleep at 6:00 a.m. and get up at 10:50 a.m. just in time for last brekkie.

This is a great base for the Oktoberfest but you wouldn't impress the girlfriend by bringing her here.

“Lucky find”

We arrived a day early in Munich as Bamberg was completely booked with a musician fest and since our reserved hotel for the next three nights had no vacancy we started looking around the main train station area for a place to stay one night. A few places we checked seemed rather expensive so we moved on. Luckily, just down a side street that seems to house mostly hostels, we found the Hotel Senefelder. The couple at the front desk were very welcoming and showed us a nice room. Although none of the rooms are designated non-smoking, it smelled fresh and the window opened into the courtyard area for more fresh air. Even though we had the window open all night, it was quiet and we slept very well. A couple of added features in this hotel are free internet so you can check e-mails and a vending machine that dispenses good beer and wine, snacks, and necessities at reasonable prices. The breakfast the next morning was very good and you were waited on by a very efficient woman. She kept items well stocked and was the fastest service we experienced in all of Germany. While the area around the main train station at first seems questionable, we felt completely secure at this hotel and appreciated the convenience of walking to the market area and major attractions. Also, the front desk couple were able to give great suggestions for places to eat and good directions - something we took full advantage of.

“Comfortable, Great position”

My Uncle (who is married to a Bavarian and worked in Munich) discovered this little gem many years ago and my family have been using it ever since. It is basic but it is very clean and 'Very' well located right by the main train station (a dodgy location in any city, but in this one it is perfectly safe). I wouldn't say it was 'great' for a romantic weekend or for business travellers with High expectations (if that is not a contradiction). What it does define to me is funtional. In 20 years I have found this hotel to be a perfect staging post for a trip to Munich or as a stopover to travel further in Europe, especially Austria. It is within walking distance of the city centre and staggering distance from the Hofbrauhaus and restaurants. I have just returned from 5* Luxury in the Carribean and still look forward to my next trip to the mountains and stopping at the Senefelder/Munich.

I almost feel regretful that giving this little secret away will mean I can't get a reservation the next time I want to travel to that area, but I have found Tripadvisor to be such a useful resource over the past 6 months!

P.S. I understand that American standards can be a little higher/different to many, and with that in mind I would say that this is not what you would really call a 'Vacation' hotel. If what you want is 1st class, clean, well positioned accomodation in Munich to go exploring, then you could do an awful lot worse than check this one. Have a look at their website. And breakfast is included.
