The Herzog Wilhelm is a very basic, no frills hotel but located right in the centre of Munich. Our stay was pleasant enough but it was in the middle of a heatwave and the rooms were insanely hot with no air con.

Breakfast and reception are in a hotel nearby which is unusual.

A group of 7 of us stayed at the Herzog Wilhelm during the middle week of Oktoberfest in 2011. The location is within very easy walking distance of Oktoberfest itself as well as a very quick walk from the Karlsplatz train stop and therefore to all sorts of sightseeing. You should be aware that the rooms ARE small, but the location makes up for it. The breakfast is OK (typical European breakfast with meats, cheeses, breads, cereal, etc.) and the staff isn't the nicest (but really, who would be when 99% of their visitors for almost 3 weeks are drunk from Oktoberfest), but they were helpful enough at letting us store our luggage and giving us a few directions around the area. For us, location was key, and the Herzog Wilhelm definitely scores high in that regard.

I stayed here in October 2011 during a Munich fair, so I was forced to come here because everywhere else was booked.

My comments:

- Very tiny single room without amenities (no TV etc)
- Shower was on hallway, however to be fair, this has been disclosed in my booking confirmation (I must have overlooked it). There are probably other rooms with shower ensuite.
- Very old looking throughout.
- Breakfast products relatively cheap (i.e. orange squash rather than juice)
- Receptionist was unable to connect call when my wife phoned
- Toilet flush in the common shower room wasn't working so well
- One time when I showered water did not get hot (just lukewarm)
- They were unable to provide me with large towels

On the other hand, the location was perfect just between Stachus and Sendlinger Tor. It was very quiet and I had a perfect view from room 608 on the Marienkirche church and the city hall as well.

So I read the poor reviews of Hotel Herzog Wilhelm-Tannenbaum and truly thought- how bad could it be? Well please do not make the same mistake we made and STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE! I have travelled all over the world and never met such rude staff. First they charged us twice for the room and when we informed them there was not even an apology and we were out of pocket for exchange rate and going into overdraft. Front of house ignored us for 10 minutes while talking to a friend before allowing us to check in and then when asking for advice literally threw a map at me. The location is great in terms of proximity to the town but HORRIBLE if you want to get any sleep. There is major construction works going on next door which begins at 6:30AM EVERY MORNING!! Munich is an amazing city- do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else.
