I was sent to this hotel by an airline when my flight got cancelled and other hotels, closer to the airport, were full. I arrived in the hotel at 1:30 am, quite tired, after travelling for several hours.
I was given a key and sent through a rather confusing maze of corridors to my room. When I arrived at the corridor leading to the room I found it completely dark, with no lights. I couldn't find any light switch and was unable to locate my room, so I returned to the front desk.
The clerk told me that she knew there was no light in this corridor and suggested that I use my cell phone to get some light and locate my room this way. When I objected she told me it was the last room available, so I either find the room using my cell phone or there is no place for me to sleep.
Indeed, I managed to find the room getting some light from my cell phone. When I entered the room I was able to switch the lights on in the bathroom but nowhere else in the room.
So, I returned to the front desk to complain again. This time one of the front desk clerks came to the room with me. She discovered that all the lamps in the main part of the room were unplugged (i.e. the room was not really prepared). She plugged the lamps in and that sorted the problem out. And, yes, she used my cell phone to navigate in the darkness.
Next morning I tried to bring the situation to the attention of the front desk manager. She knew about the problem with electricity in the corridor. It wasn't a big deal in her opinionn and said nothing could have been done, so I should have been happy that I had had a place to sleep.
In fact, I am not happy as I find this level of service unacceptable. Sending guest to rooms via corridors with no electricity is a violation of basic hotel standards. The attitude of the front desk staff (both night and day shift) shows that they are lacking basic customer skills and they are not up to the job. I sent an email about my experience to the NH customer relations but never received an answer.
A half-litre bottle of water in my room had a price tag of €3.80. I understand that hotels need to make money somehow but that is unreasonable.
On the bright side: the room was clean and the bed very comfortable, although an orangey-red colour scheme a bit too bright for my liking. Also, the breakfast was excellent.
