“Bathroom Terror”

Been in this hotel for 3 nights with my wife & 7 years old son.
Friendly & helpful staff. The rooms however have seen better days. Although an adequate size, they need refurbishing, especially the bathroom. The bathroom is very small and had a lot of mould-spots, and some parts of the tap where broken and no water-pressure.
Location is very good 2 min walk to underground train, and a quiet neighborhood.
Breakfast was very good there were plenty meats, cheeses, boiled & scrambled eggs, bread an Espresso/Macchiato coffee machine and more

“Great stay!”

My husband and I have stayed in Herzog for a week. Thanks to the reviews posted here on Tripadvisor we requested a room on the court side - it was no problem to get it.
I liked the decoration of the hotel, a lot of different spots to hang out and relax. They do serve delicious food; dinner price is comparable to other restaurants of that class but don't waste your money on breakfast. Yes, it is a buffet and it is good but for 9 euros per person you can feed a family of four in the coffee shop just down the street.
I would definetely stay there again. Stania (sp?), one of the front desk staff members was especially nice.

As some ppl had pointed out, some rooms closed to the street in the hotel are noisy .

with a good location and surprisingly good breakfast, It is fair to the money. The inner decoration is tasty and has a nice garden part. The restaurant in the hotel is fairly good as well . This hotel have some defects, likes the room closed to the streets is noisy even at middle night. The rooms in the basement have no wifi coverage. Be sure to be allocated in a good room.

“Very Pleasantly Surprised, Great Value, Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2010

The owners of the Herzog own four hotels. I was actually trying to reserve, last minute, at another one of their hotels on-line and only the Herzog was available. So its nice that their system gives you options. I think the Herzog was a great find! It is just steps away from the Goetheplatz metro stop, one stop from Merienplatz. I arrived on an early plane, showed up at 9:00am, and was shown straight to my room! I was really pleased. For 62 Euros I had a really decent sized room with two twin beds, a comfy sofa and little table, a fridge, a color TV, a work desk/chair, great windows with lots of light, a balcony overlooking green space, a large closet, and a full bathroom with a tub!!! Plus, the included breakfast was the best I had at three different Bavarian hotels. The staff was friendly and helpful. Yes, the rooms are dated and a little tired. The lamps were a little dim for my eyes. Some may question the location factor, but I'm a walker and I walked to both the Central Train station and Merienplatz and back several times from here. This is NOT a hostel! [Come on!] This is a full service, if slightly dated, budget hotel at a very competitive price in an expensive city. I'll be going back to Munich in June and I'll look no further.

“great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2010

My son and I choose Herzog W. for its great location. It is on a quiet street 5/10 mins walk from Karlplatz & Neuhauser Strasse thru Karlstor, where the pedestrian area leads to Marienplatz.
Since returning I've re-read all reviews both English & German and agree with a member from Chicago. They say "quit whining" about this hotel, hear hear! Okay the rooms are tiny but were fine for single occupancy. Ditto the shower room, but both were clean. Towels were changed every day in spite of hanging them up again. This seems to happen everywhere, why bother asking guests to help save energy?
Breakfast was very good apart from no hot food e.g. scrambled eggs. Still there were plenty meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, lovely semmel (rolls) and the staff filled plates & coffee jugs as soon as they emptied.
All in all this is a great budget hotel. We booked a package thru Expedia with Easyjet flights from Edinburgh.
A visit to Garmisch-Partenkirchen is to be recommended. Train cost 15 Euros, takes 1hr 30 mins thru lovely countryside.
Back in Munich everywhere worth seeing is within walking distance of the hotel.
If travelling as a couple Der Tannenbaum (sister hotel) along the street would suit better as rooms are bigger.
Highly recommend Herzog-W. for your stay in Munich especially if it's just a base to sleep!
