If you're looking for a clean, comfortable, and economical stay in a quiet residential neighborhood, Golden Tulip Hotel Olymp is the place. My family thought the restaurant was excellent. But if you'd rather get a quick bite at a convenience store or bakery, there are many shops within a short walking distance (they all seem to close very early however). The rooms were warm and comfy, even in the middle of winter. The units are spacious, with a separate bedroom, bath, hallway, and living area - great if you have family members who go to sleep at different times. There's also a wireless network for your computer.
But if you're looking to frequently hang out in Munich, the hotel's location might prove to be a burden. It's a 20-minute walk from the train station, 15 minutes if you walk briskly. It was extremely difficult for us because of all our luggage and young tired children! And, there were no taxis waiting for passengers at the time. We just grit our teeth and went for it. While on the journey to the hotel, no one we asked seemed to know where the hotel was. So we ended up walking more than we needed. Now, going from the hotel to the station was easy because we could easily hail a taxi. Yet when you get to the station, the wait for a train may take about 15 minutes.
The staff is efficient, but I think Americans like us are used to more friendliness and more "Here, let me help you with that," and "May I help you?" I'm not sure if this is a cultural thing, or a Golden Tulip thing. Not meaning to complain; it's just that we were a bit surprised.
Would we stay there again? I think if we were touring Munich and other surrounding sites, then yes. If we were touring only Munich, then no, because of the hotel's distance from the city.
