I was slightly concerned about this hotel booking as I'd read some slightly negative reviews on Tripadvisor, and the location was close to the train station which often can mean a slightly rough area, but I needn't have worried. The location turned out to be great, as it was literally accross the road from the main station and also the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn station where we caught the cogwheel train up the fantastic Zugspitze.
We stayed at this hotel for three nights as part of a tour of Bavaria and Austria, staying in 4 different hotels, this was the cheapest, despite having breakfast included, which had also worried me, but I think this was the best value for money hotel of our trip!
The hotel itself was very traditional, and the staff were perhaps a little unfriendly, but I think that was just their way, they were kind of stern! On the first day at breakfast one of the waitresses gabbled some German at us, and although I knew a few words in German, I didn't understand what she said, so I apologised and said we were English. She acknowledged this, but then spoke to us in German every morning for the rest of our stay!
The room itself was huge! It had two sets of french windows one set opening onto a small balcony, and the other a juliet type balcony. There was also a small window which could be opened so the room never got too hot. The view from our balcony was of a beautiful green mountain range and a ski lift but due to it being summer, this was not in operation. From the other french windows there was a view over some restaurants/bars, and the bus and train station. Despite the location, we never felt threatened or that this was a bad part of town. The whole of Garmisch Partenkirchen was very quiet and felt extremely safe. By 10pm, most of the town had closed and was like a ghost town, so eat early if you can! There was barely any noise at night so sleeping was not a problem.
The furniture in the room was mainly wooden (pine) and there was even a sofa, although this looked and felt a bit tired! The room was very clean, and while it perhaps could have done with a little attention and updating, it was fine for what we needed and it was nice to have such a lot of space. The ensuite again was the not the most flash, but it was all very clean and was perfectly adequate.
Breakfast was included with our room booking and was a very extensive buffet selection, massive range of fruits, different types of yoghurts, endless platters of meats and cheeses, breads, pastries, cooked items, boiled eggs and even muffins and cakes!
All in all, a great place to stay, Garmisch Partenkirchen is unbelievably beautiful, and a trip up the Zugspitze is unmissable!
