I organised a stag trip to Garmisch at the beginning of March 2011. There were seven of us and we had a triple and two double rooms, all with baths and showers. We arrived 1:30am after flying in to Munich and getting the train. The owners had left a note up on the window and we rang the bell and somebody came down and let us in, gave us the keys and let us check in properly the next day. The rooms were fine, and were cleaned when we were down at breakfast. Decoration was fine with nicely decorated doors (!). Breakfast was cereals, coffee, juices, croissants and bread plus coffee from a buffet. The staff were very helpful, with good English and gave us a few ideas about evening activities, maps of the town and directions to the bars, ordered taxis for us etc. It isn't a five star hotel, but at £30- £35 per person per night, you shouldn't expect that. It was good value and as we were either skiing or out drinking we didn't need luxury. Location is good, about five minutes walk from the station, and five minutes from the centre of Garmisch, and ten minutes walk from Partenchirchen bars.
I would recommend Garmisch for skiing for a three or four day trip, but probably not longer. Garmisch Classic is an interesting set of runs, through the cliffs and the woods, with a few black runs like the Kandehar if you want something challenging. The only risk is that it is quite low with max height at 2,200m so you take your chances with the snow. We lucked out and good snow and great sun. Compared to France it was a bargain to eat and drink - four bottles of beer at the bottom of the slopes for nine Euros, about eight Euros for a decent main course up the slopes. Zugspitze glacier is smaller, but an interesting place to ski for a day, but an hour journey on the cog train to get up there.
Nightlife in Garmisch and Partenchirchen is great. We were there during a carnival, so ended up dancing and drinking with people dressed up as mushrooms and geese - weird. We had a traditional evening in the beer hall, but were out of place as the only blokes not in Lederhosen.
