“Beware! There are 2 Post Hotels in GP - same reservation system! This is dirty, dingy loggy, rooms and service lacking.”
We made a reservation, we thought at the Post Hotel Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Arrived late at night and went to the address, but the hotel was closed for renovations! We kept calling the front desk and finally realized she was describing directions to another location. There were two - Atlas Posthotel and Post Hotel - each reciprocating on reservation hotlines! The one we thought we were going to was recommended in a travel book and was located in the quaint, cobblestoned streets of old town Garmisch. This one is in Partenkirschen, the newer part of the city which is not cute or quaint, but a bit depressed. And, this Atlas Posthotel is NOT in a nice neighborhood. It is on a VERY busy street and at night it doesn't have a safe feel to it.
Anyhow, desperate for a bed and good night sleep, we made it to the hotel with her directions. Arrived and were disapointed in the appearance the absence of parking - no exaggeration - NO PARKING. We were told to just find something a few blocks away - maybe pay or maybe not. So, my husband waited in the car while i went in. I was so shocked at the state of the lobby that i asked to preview the room. The front desk clerk was not too accommodating.
Seriously, my first impression of the lobby was that it was a fleabag hotel I had seen in a movie about drug deals or prostitution. Old is an understatement to describe the state of the the lobby carpet and furnishings. the carpeting on the stairs was rubbed completely to a nub with holes etc. The "Sauna" was the saddest thing I've ever seen, just in a closet off the main hallway with an old 1970's type fake wood door. The hallway had several levels to go up just to walk to the room and several DIFFERENT carpets at each level. All equally worn, old and dated. Finally, I arrived at my room. It was large, but with old curtains and bedding, did not smell clean and the bathroom was from circa 1979.
I returned to the front desk and told her the room and hotel were not as seen on the internet and were not meeting our expectations. She was very disgusted with this and said well, you signed the book to see the room, so you must pay 20 Euros for the registration. I too was disgusted, but agreed. we then called hotels in Grainau, even closer to the great mountain, see my review on Hotel Alpenhof in Grainau.
Summary: Standards seem lower in this area/towns for hotels. You have to pay a lot to get even a basic amount of cleanliness and even then rooms are tired and not updated.
