“Everything fine and dog friendly too - but no evening restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

We (me, wife & dog) stayed one night on our drive down to Lake Como. This is a very charming establishment in traditional style, with a main building that holds the public rooms and an attached annexe with bedrooms round a courtyard swimming pool and garden. The staff are friendly and helpful but we were surprised to find that the restaurant is open for breakfast only (which is substantial and included in the price). We weren't sure if this is a temporary arrangement or because it's summer season. We ate very well in Schatten. Underground parking is available at €5 per day and there's an extra charge for the dog. The room we had was ideal and they had even gone to the trouble of putting down a feeding station for the dog. For that vital early morning doggy walk, there's a patch of grass out the back and samll park 5' away. They must have spent somke money on it since some of the earleir reviews - it was clean, light and very well kept.
It must have had some

“good location, friendly, good breakfast, good wifi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2010

Stayed for three nights in April 2010. Really enjoyed it. Small room, but don't visit this area if you plan to stay inside...good value and would definitely stay at again.

“Pleasant Staff, No heat, Very thin walls.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2009

I stayed here for 3 nights in late November. It was very cold in GAP, already with lots of snow on the ground. When we checked in we were walked to our room on the 2nd floor of the main building. We thought it was a nice touch until we realized that the reason was that the desk clerk had to put a space heater in our room. She informed us that there was no heat in the hotel! If we hadn't pre-paid for our room through Orbitz, I would have checked out right then. The space heater really only heated an area about 6 inches around it -- seriously. So if you were not essentially touching the heater, you were freezing. Both people in the bed could not be warm at night, and either the person in the bathroom or the person in the bedroom had a small amount of heat, but not both. We asked for a second heater but were told that there would not be enough for other guests if we were given two. I thought that for the $100/nt I paid they could purchase a 2nd heater for the room, but they did not agree. I asked for a discount since it was actually warmer outside in the sun. They refused that as well. The lack of heat issue really ruined my visit to the area because I did not want to spend anytime outside since I knew there was no chance to warm up upon return to the hotel. The second night we were there another couple checked into the room next to us. We could clearly hear everything that went on in their room as if they were in the same room as us. We did not miss even one syllable of their conversation. The threadbare carpet in the common areas did not bother me much, I thought it sort of added to the charm of the place, but I did not like the lack of sufficient lighting in the hallways. The breakfast was good and the person who attended it was very friendly. However, we, as well as the other guests, had to eat wearing jackets, gloves, and hats. The front desk seemed to be manned by two girls. One was very friendly and seemed to go out of her way to be pleasant. The other was a little less so, but still pleasant in a more reserved way. She was the one who refused the extra heater and the discount request. If the heat had not been an issue, I would have found this hotel to be somewhat charming, but I would not stay here again. The pleasant staff and good breakfast cannot make up for the thin walls, lack of lighting and overall darkness of the place.

“STAY AWAY”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2008

Stay away, this hotel is horrible. I rented 2 double rooms for me and my family. Our rooms were completely unacceptable!! The plaster in one of the bathrooms was peeling off the wall in chunks. You could see the exposed plumbing and wall studs. The other bathroom had not been cleaned in a LONG time. The toilet water was a horrible color with a film of growth skimming the water. The toilet bowl was stained with the filth. There were holes in the sheets and blankets. The furniture is something out of kids summer camp: wood frames with threadbare fabric. The hallway wall and carpet had water stains with black mold.

I asked to be moved to different rooms and they refused. They said I was in the refurbished rooms, some of the nicer in the hotel. If that's the case, I'd hate to see the other rooms.

My family and I checked out within 20 minutes of checking in. We drove around in the middle of the night til we found a hotel that could take us. However, I'm still in a dispute with this hotel and Orbitz for the $700 fee. I'm a hard-working, honest citizen being ripped-off

“Outdated, poor maintained, and foul odors in room - stay elsewhere!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2008

From the outside, this hotel is quaint and maybe even charming. That ends once you walk in and smell some sort of sour odor (coming from the kitchen?). The woman at the front desk was nice and helpful. The hotel is divided up into two separate building - the main building where you checkin and the other you walk across the rear parking lot to access. I was traveling with friend and we had a room in each of the two buildings.

I stayed in the rear building. I can't understand how anyone could give this place more than 1 star. I think they have been using the "we're the oldest hotel in garmisch" line as an execuse for not having to do any upkeep. The hallways did not have any lights which not only makes it feel a little unsafe but makes it extremely challenging to get the key in the door. The room had an unrecognizable odor. The bed was FIRM. There was a sheet of particle board undernearth the mattress instead of a boxspring. The carpet was of the ugly green indoor/outdoor variety. At the top of the stairs by our room there was a smeared handprint on the wall that looked like it was possibly dried blood (I'm not making this up!). I saw my friends room in the main building of the hotel and it was quaint although still outdated and same crappy mattress and foul odor.

I was in Austria and Germany for the past two weeks and stayed at 5 different hotels during that time. This was by far the most disappointing experience. Don't get tricked by the "cute" pictures of exterior of the hotel. EVERYTHING looks cute and has a great view of the mountains in Garmisch.

There breakfast was just ok. There's a great bakery directly across the street which I recommend.
