We stayed at the Gasthaus Maria Gern on May 31, 2008. We had been there before on three occassions during the past ten years. This site (trip advisor) shows the rates as being about 57 euros, but we were charged 100 Euros, $166.00 at the exchange rate we purchased our Euros. Unfortuately you can not make reservations through this site so be prepared to pay much more.

The beds were not comfortable nor was the room and balcony as clean as on previous visit. The Gasthaus was/is closed on Saturday, although they did give guests a choice of three menue items for dinner that day.

The place has new owners and has lost some of its previous charm, however the scenery is out of this world.

Our next trip will not start at this hotel.

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel & Gasthaus Maria Gern and truly enjoyed the experience. Maria Gern is a little hard to find but if you follow the posted signs you'll be fine.

The Hotel/Gasthaus is located right next to a beautiful chapel and there are cows and sheep grazing in the adjoining fields. It is a very quiet and peaceful setting and the surrounding mountains are just beautiful. The Hotel/Gasthaus is not fancy or luxurious by any means, but it is very clean and the staff is very friendly. We truly enjoyed sitting on our room's balcony at night drinking a glass of wine or beer and looking at the billions of stars visible in the clear, clean mountain air.

If you're looking to get out-of-town to enjoy some magnificent alpine scenery, do some walking, or just enjoy some quiet time, Maria Gern is the place.

Stay here -not in town! Great location a couple of miles outside of Berchtesgaden, but with easy access to the town along a beautiful winding road. Picture-perfect setting surrounded by mountains and woods, all taken in from your own private balcony. Don't miss the shady hiking trail across the road that follows a crystal-clear running stream. Nice, comfortable hotel with friendly staff, at a bargain price. Excellent breakfast buffet included, and a relaxing outdoor dining patio with beautiful views.

Our room was lovely -- comfortable, clean and up to date, with a spectacular view of mountains, the church, and lush green hillsides. It's worth paying extra for a balcony. The place is only minutes from Berchtesgaden, but it seems set in a private world. The photos posted by an earlier reviewer are excellent, yet no photos really do justice to the setting.

The innkeeper, also the chef, is quite helpful, and he does speak English. The restaurant serves good traditional food.
