Hotel Krone is charming and quaint, both inside and out, but provides guests with only the basic services/amenities. We rented a single room as well as a double during our two-night stay. The hotel is just outside of town, which means we had to drive to downtown Berchtesgaden to eat dinner.
The rooms were clean, cozy, and quite attractive, with traditional carvings and decorations and a lovely seating niche in the double. The beds were soft and comfortable. Each room had its own balcony with a spectacular view of the mountains surrounding Berchtesgaden. Like most other European hotels, the Krone does not have A/C, but that was made bearable by cleverly constructed windows and balcony doors that could be cracked open without creating a security risk. However, although the bathrooms were clean, they were also quite small and devoid of all but the basic amenities (soap, one packet of shampoo/body-wash which they failed to replace on the second day, and towels). In addition, although the each room is provided with a telephone, a small TV, and an alarm clock, several of the electronic amenities were not functioning upon our arrival; one alarm clock was permanently broken. Lastly, there was no free bottled water.
As for meals, the hotel served a free breakfast as well as dinner every day. Although we never attended dinner, the breakfast proved to be simple but tasty. The back porch of the hotel was an excellent spot to eat, and provided more breathtaking views of Berchtesgaden and the surrounding mountains.
The innkeeper was warm and friendly, and gave good directions to local attractions despite his limited English. He also volunteered to provide us with useful tourist discount cards, which we returned upon checkout. However, he turned in for the night by 9 or 10pm, closing the check-in desk, locking up the single computer terminal in the lobby, turning off the free wireless internet access, and turning out all of the lights in the hallways before going to bed. This made for a frustrating experience when we wanted to check our email or search the internet for travel information and directions after 9pm. It also meant that we ended up stumbling around in near-darkness, trying to unlock the doors to our rooms without being able to see the keyhole, because the hall lights were out.
As for public spaces, other than the porch with the tables and the wonderful view, there was also the aforementioned lobby (which included the computer terminal, the check-in desk, and a few tables and chairs, as well as its own lovely view of the mountains) and the indoor dining room (also quite clean and charming). However, the staircases between stories were oddly placed, and the elevator was so small that we had a hard time taking our luggage up to our rooms when we checked in.
Overall, Hotel Krone was satisfactory; we would stay there again, if able to make alternate arrangements for accessing the internet.
