If you are a true walker from the northern part of the UK, and not a namby-pamby southerner who faints at the sight of a slight incline, you will love this hotel. We travelled as a group of eight, flying from Manchester to Munich and got the train down to Berchtesgaden where we got a mini-bus taxi from the station up to the hotel. Notice I said 'up'! Yes, the hotel is situated on a hill above the town but the bonus of that is the magnificent views you get from the 'mountain view' side including the dining room and terrace. Had we been namby-pamby southerners, we would have been able to fly to Salzburg airport which is much nearer (the only plus point!) Herr and Frau Grafe run the hotel themselves with a couple of cleaning staff and there is no bar in the hotel which is why they 'shut up shop' at 9 pm as they have to get up very early to do breakfasts. Monday is also Ruhetag (their rest day) so you have to eat out in the town on that evening. On all the other evenings, we ate in the hotel and the food was 'to die for'. Although the menu wasn't large, the food was reasonably priced and generously proportioned and made with top quality meat / fish etc. (the Germans don't really understand vegetarianism!) Herr and Frau Grafe did not speak a great deal of English but they were lovely and very helpful. The hotel does not take credit cards as is common in several parts of Germany but there are plenty of cash machines in the town. You also pay a local tax to the hotel of about 2 euros a day but, for that, you get a pass which covers free travel on all the buses in the area and even nearly to Salzburg for which you can pay a little extra.
The rooms were spacious, all with balcony and spotlessly clean as was the lounge / reception area where there was a computer and free tea and coffee available up to six in the evening - just what you need after a day's walking. There was no beer or wine available from a bar until evening meal but there was plenty available from the mini bars in the rooms which you could take down to the terrace if you wanted to. The mini bar prices were ridiculously cheap compared to the UK with 500ml of beer and a quarter litre of wine both priced at 3 euros.
The walking in the area is truly magnificent with lots of well marked trails and, of course, the free bus rides mean you can do linear rather than circular walks.
It's really not that far to walk into town in the evening for a meal or after eating in the hotel and, providing you have enough beer or wine, you won't even notice the walk back up to the hotel - that's if you are a real walker!!
