Once upon a time in the geographic wonderland known as Bavaria there was a cozy, comfortable, historic inn...and the good news is..It is still there and is run by the consummate inn-keeper, Frau Scharfenberg, who is anxious to serve your needs, and dedicated to seeing that all her guest are 100% satisfied.
After navigating CDG and MUC airports and the Munich train station, it was exciting to find ourselves in the center of all the history and beaurty of the Bavarian Alps region of Berchtesgaden and Obersalzberg. We were even more overwhelmed to have the honor and privilege to stay at the Hotel Zum Turken. This is a truly remarkable opportunity to stay in a remarkable place. The "Turken" is a historic Hotel where the past and the present come together and create an intense feeling in the air that you have found someplace special, time honored, unique.
The quite surroundings and genuine hospitality of the "Turken" are so refreshing and so energizing. The setting of the hotel is as beautiful as it is historic. The views are postcard perfect and there are so many activities in the area for adventure, exploring history, and hiking , or just relaxing in the "Turken Haus Bar" with a good book. The Haus Bar is a large and very homey 24 hour salon with a real bar, a TV, and an honor Maxi-Bar that serves all the needs of the guest. There is an extremely large variety of beverages. The bar is stocked with everything from the local schnaps and beer to whiskey, colas and coffee. The sunny breakfast room has beautiful views and Frau Scharfenbrg serves a breakfast fit for a Koenig (Included). As she told us, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" and her guest are very important to her. The Hotel began as a family business in 1911 and she still continues this tradition. Thank Goodness!! The rooms are large and inviting. The beds are comfy, and all is very clean. The view from our room's balcony was breathtaking. There is ample parking and the location is very close to all the attractions of the Berchtesgaden/Obersalzberg area. Frau Scharfenberg has the all important detailed map of the entire region (Great to rent a car and explore), and many brochures and travel tips to help you see a variety of sights. She may even have some discount cards that help with parking rates and attraction prices. She helped us choose one of the best restaurants in the area for dinner. We went to a lovely quaint hillside spot with an outside terrace and tremendous view and delicious food (A great suggestion).
One of the most unique area sites is the Hotel itself, and the Bunkers underneath. Much has been written about them. The Hotel's web site and other WWII sites, will bring you up to date if you are not familiar with the part this location played in WWII. I want to stress that you should not miss the Bunkers under the Hotel, even if you do not stay at the Hotel. They are open daily..see the web site.. but staying at the Hotel will give you the whole experience. Frau Scharfenberg also sells books, postcards and foldout picture books that prove interesting to history buffs. All this illustrates the uniqueness of the Hotel, and by staying there you become part of its story, part of its history.
I think it would be very difficult, or nearly impossible to find a more significant location to stay in this part of Germany. It is an experience not to be missed. Please take a look at the web site (www.hotel-zum-tuerken.com).. yes there is an additional "e" ..and see for yourself..or email Frau Scharfenbrg and she will promptly answer your questions ,and I am sure, love to welcome you as a guest. Her graciousness is untiring as she greets and accommodates visitors from around the world.
To paraphrase a famous quote:..you never really leave a place you love; part of it stays with you and you leave a part of yourself behind. That sums up our "Turken" experience.
