“Perfect for the Wagnerfest!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

During the five weeks of the Festival, Bayreuth hotels conspire to increase their accommodation rates by 100% -150%. While this is understandable, such blatant anti-competitive profiteering would be illegal in the UK (and possibly the US). So did we feel ripped off? Not at all. The Arvena Kongress goes out of its way to give Wagnerites a warm welcome and excellent value for money. Although it is one of the nearest hotels to the Festspielhaus (15-20 minutes’ walk), it offers a free shuttle service up the hill in a charming replica vintage bus, and while you wait you can help yourself to prosecco, fruit punch, tea and snacks. There is an area in the lobby where DVDs of Wagner operas are screened. The restaurant is geared to post-performance dinners, and the staff actually seem to welcome the sudden influx at 11 o’clock. The bar doesn’t close until 2.30am! Breakfast is a huge spread and, if you eat like a German, very good value. Alternatively there is brunch for late risers, also included in the room rate. As this is basically a modern conference hotel, it has been chosen by the New York Wagner Society as their ‘base’ and the venue for their series of morning lectures, so English-speakers whose visit coincides with theirs (usually the last ten days of the Festival), have another good reason to stay here.

In line with the hotel’s character, the bedrooms are ‘functional’ rather than ‘gemütlich’, so we were surprised at the absence of coffee/tea-making facilities, though a kettle and cups were readily supplied on request. Even more surprising was the absence of drawer-space; just hanging space and shelves. But we were grateful for the air-conditioning (rare in Bayreuth) and a bath-tub as well as the shower. On the top floor there is a sauna, steam-room, small gym and sun-deck. However, the staff are the hotel’s greatest asset – from the smiling ‘Guten Tag!’ on arrival to the final ‘Auf Wiedersehn’ on check-out. They are multi-lingual, well trained, attentive and, above all, charming. So if you are looking for a place to stay during the Festival, which fully understands the needs – and peculiarities – of Wagner-lovers, you need look no further.

“A great hotel for Wagner Groupies.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2010

The bad news first: the Arvena bedrooms are designed for men, by men. That's tough if you're a woman, especially when you're staying a whole week for the Wagner Festival. Imagine a bedroom with not a single drawer. There's nowhere to put your lingerie - despite there being plenty of space for a chest of drawers. You have to keep your undies and T-shirts in your suitcase.
There are no toiletries, either. Containers with "shampoo/conditioner for body and hair", are suspended above the bath and basin.
Yet, were we asked if we would choose the Arvena again for future Wagner festivals, our answer would be "Absolutely".
Why? This hotel may be stingy on toiletries, but it's incredibly generous with everything else. The stupendous buffet breakfast is open from 7 in the morning, until 1.30pm. It changes at 10.30am into a "brunch" menu, with added meat or fish dishes. You can help yourself not only to unlimited tea/coffee during those hours, but also to chilled Prosecco (Germans call it Sekt).
On rainy days when there is no performance, you can amuse yourself in the little side room, looking at videos of famous past Bayreuth Ring performances - absolute bliss for Wagner nuts!
Everyone in the hotel was there for one purpose, on a Wagner pilgrimage to the Opera House, which the composer designed himself.
The Arvena is convenient, only about 10 minutes walk from the station and town centre; Walking up the famous "Green Hill" takes longer, but the Arvena has coaches to take guests there and back. While you're waiting for the coach, you can while away the time with free canapes and more tea, coffee or Sekt, all free of charge.
The atmosphere is friendly and the staff are helpful, determined to make your stay a happy one . After the initial shock at the lack of basic amenities, we settled down and simply loved the place.

“A good hotel for Wagnerites”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2009

As other reviewers have said, the Arvena Kongress may be a bit lacking in quaintness and Gemütlichkeit, but it fully understands its guests during Festspiele; we are in Bayreuth because of Wagner -anything else is unimportant.
For example:
- A free shuttle bus to the Grüner Hügel, starting two hours before the performance, and shuttling eight people at a time, every ten minutes.
- Free canapés and Prosecco while waiting for the bus
- dinner after the performance, from 11.00pm until.... well, I have no idea.
- a cosy bar in which to sit and gossip about this year's performance with fellow Wagnerites.
- a small area of the entrance lobby, dedicated to a continuous showing of Katharina's Meistersinger
- And now, as an extra bonus, since our last visit, the Wagner Society of New York has moved its English language lectures (by Prof. Vaget) to a conference room in the Arvena Kongress, which means that a guest can get up late, have a leisurely breakfast, attend the lecture and still have time to pop down to the little shop to select last night's photographs before dressing for the performance.

Oh yes , and the air conditioned rooms were a pleasnt relief this year. Conditions during Rheingold can only be described as 'brutal'.

“Could be Better”

Stayed here for 2 nights during the festival. The hotel is centrally located within walking distance of the town.

The good points
1. Rooms very clean and bathrooms spotless
2. Looked after the guests of the festival very well (managed to get me a ticket within 30 mins of arrival!
3. Restaurant was well priced, service was swiftt and the food as good.

The not so bad points
1. Soul less. Too big
2. Breakfast is in the ballroom and very German.People rushing around to buffet stations

When I travel to germany I like a little charm. I almost could have forgot that I was in Bavaria and Germany
3. The gym is non existent. That said I was on my own both nights on the cross trainer

“Fabulous stay for Bayreuther Festspiele”

Our home for 9 nights during the recent Bayreuth Festival. A fabulous stay! Hotel and staff cater to the festival crowd superbly. Enjoyed the just-completed air-conditioned rooms (the only in Bayreuth, I understand)! Breakfast is great and turns into brunch till 1:30p. Shuttle to Festspielhaus is helpful. Superb in all ways.
