My husband & I have just returned from 4 nights at the Le Meridien in Stuttgart. We had an absolutely excellent stay and will definately return on future visits to the City.
We arrived on a transatlantic flight before the stated check-in time of 3:00 PM but the hotel still had a room for us and allowed us to begin our stay early. We had a room with a king-sized bed which was extremely comfortable and surprisingly didn't adopt the German tradition of separate bedding. The bathroom was one of the best we've experienced in recent years with great lighting, seating (in addition to the toilet), and even a bathroom scale. The TV has a wonderful choice of free channels including English/UK (BBC, ITV, CNN, Eurosport), Italian and French.
Little touches such as complimentary mineral water and a clothes brush were extremely welcome. There was even a fold-away ironing board which isn't as common in Europe as in the US.
The spa is beautiful, very relaxing and the gym is very well equipped. Using either (or both as we did) definately enhanced our stay and assuaged the guilt from over-indulging at the Christmas Market food stalls!
The staff are polite, attentive, friendly and professional. And all we encountered spoke English fluently despite us speaking German to them - but with very heavy English accents which obviously inspired them to 'accomodate' us!
I would have rated this hotel 5/5 on all counts, all but for two issues we discovered and feel we should definately share.
1. There is NO free internet access in this hotel. In the rooms it is a whopping EUR 0.60/min which equates to about $1 US at the moment. They stop charging when you reach EUR 21 per day, but that is extremely easy to do and it's $30 per day extra that we didn't want to incur. To make matters worse, they even charge in their business centre. This is done via prepaid card and partially used cards cannot be re-used. In such an internet age, and for a hotel that charges premium rates, this seems petty. So if you need to stay connected, plan to use an internet cafe (they still exist in Stuttgart and now we can see why).
2. The cost of breakfast at the hotel is confiscatory and unclear. The room service menu has various selections for breakfast: 'French' (EUR 8), 'Continental (EUR 11), etc. We did not want in-room dining so went to the restaurant where we were asked to sign in on taking our table. My husband spotted that this meant signing up-front for the EUR 25 option (that's $42 folks), so we asked why we were not being given the same menu as in-room. The explanation was that there isn't a menu - if you take breakfast in the restaurant, it's the full buffet or bust. We know Stuttgart well and opted instead to take the walk through the park to the wonderful Grand Cafe Planie which opens at 07:00 even on Sundays.
So... forewarned is forearmed. Stay at Le Meridien, have a wonderful time, but don't take your PC or eat breakfast unless you truly have funds to burn.
