Stayed a night here for a meeting the next day in Karlsruhe. The firm I work with has introduced a new limit on budget for hotels in Europe. With both Renaissance and Novotel in Karlsruhe over the budget, this was the next best option.
Location: There are goods and bads of its location. The good points: it is a few hundred metres from the main train station, it is on the road with the tram line, it is opposite the city's park, it is a few minutes walk to the exhibition/congress centre (I believe) and it is in a quiet neighbourhood. Not so good point is there isnt any cafe or restaurant within walking distance, as far as I have managed to work out. I asked the reception, and they told me there is a German beer house and an Italian restaurant both a couple of blocks away but they dont seem too enthusiastic.
Room: well, they upgraded me to a suite on the 10th floor, access by a separate lift which goes to the 10th floor only. The room is good, but perhaps not a suite you would expect with sitting room, dining room, etc etc. It was a big room, but not much bigger than a large room in a US hotel, with two double beds, a sofa suite, a working table, fridge, TV, a bathroom and a separate WC. The wifi worked straightaway with very good signal. The upkeep and maintenance are good, beds are comfortable.
Food: There is a restaurant and a bar in the hotel. But the restaurant was fully booked that night, when I visited at about 8pm. Apparently, three tour groups arrived and booked out the restaurant. The bar was packed and smokey, so I headed back to my room for room service instead. Poached salmon in a saffron sauce, with new potatos and spinach. It was very good indeed ! I made sure I was late enough before I headed down for breakfast the next morning to avoid the crowd from the tour groups. There was a good choice or fruits, yoghurts, cereals, breads, cold meats, and cooked breakfast at the buffet.
Reception: They upgraded me to a suite, as I mentioned. They were very helpful, and efficient. The only complain about the reception is the very blue lighted wall behind the receptionists, which makes it very uncomfortable to stand in front of the reception for any length of time.
