There really is no other option in Heidelberg if you're after a top spot at the right price. At backpacker hostel prices you get privacy and cleanliness right in the centre of town from a friendly an efficient owner.
We travelled to Heidelberg by train so we caught a route to the Altstadt Station rather than the HBF. From here it was about a 10 minute walk and really easy to find. We were greeted by the friendly owner Martin who is a lovely and interesting man. He gave us a map, asked about our interests, and gave us advice on what to do and when based upon opening hours and the weather forecast over the following days, then left us to our privacy but told us where he was if we needed him.
We had a double room private bathroom which was basic but spacious and spotless clean. The location was fantastic - literally just a couple of steps from the Market Square in the old town, from where you can stroll to all the major sights, restaurants and bars. The only problem with our little room was that the windows faced a shared service courtyard where we heard the neighbours at night and a neighbouring shop very early in the morning baking bread or the like (around 4am). Earplugs fixed that problem but they were needed.
We were going to catch the public bus to HBF when we left but the rain was heavy so we caught a taxi and had no problems getting one in the morning.
Pension Jeske is such good value and Martin does an excellent job. I'd say it's above average for it's value but the reason I gave it 3 stars was because I didn't want to mislead people about the standard.
