“Good price, good location, decent rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2007

A perfect location in the heart of Heidelberg's Old Town area and a very reasonable price are Pension Jeske's strongest points. We thought the rooms were above average--nicely decorated and clean. Martin was very friendly and helpful. The downsides were that we had to share a bathroom (because we were coming in the busiest month, Martin was unwilling to let us reserve a room with a private bath so far in advance). We had to pay cash up front at the beginning of our stay, and the towels were VERY old--they looked more like rags--this seemed anomalous, as the rest of the Pension was kept up very well. The check in/check out times were less flexible, it being a smaller pension with only a few rooms. But overall, we were very satisfied--for 55 euros a night for a double with such a great location, one could hardly ask for more.

“A Terrible Experience!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2007

I'm afraid I can't attest to the level of comfort of this hotel, since our party of 4 never made it there-- Herr Martin retracted our booking the very day before our arrival!

A word to the wise: buyer beware. Hotels occasionally overbook, and, while inconvenient, it's a pretty understandable mix-up, especially during high-season. However, there was no excuse for Martin's rudeness to me on the phone.

My fiancé initially contacted the hotel by email to give our dates and request a booking, and received an automated reply that, while informative, didn't confirm anything. So we called. The lady on the phone said that they had plenty of room, and just to reconfirm by email a day or two before our arrival.

We sent an email two days before, as promised, and received a strangely brusque response from Martin: "You have no booking at my hotel." We were baffled, so I immediately called. He was quite friendly at first, until I gave my name. He became very defensive and kept interrupting while I tried to explain the situation. I would have understand his tone if I had been angry myself, but I was very calm and polite... confused, not angry! That was why his behavior was all the more egregious.

After interrupting me and refusing to listen to a word I said-- and denying that his colleague had ever taken our reservation down-- he said "I am not going to discuss this further." I was completely taken aback. I told him I understood that the booking was lost, but that I wanted him to know that there was, in fact, a booking made, and he yelled "all right, fine, you're right and I'm wrong. Happy? Now GOODBYE!" and then he slammed down the phone.

I apologize for writing such a lengthy post, but I am utterly dismayed at the foul treatment my family and I received while attempting to reserve this hotel. I don't want to cast aspersions, but my fiancé has a very typically Jewish name, and there was just something so strange about the way this man retracted our reservation after another woman had already taken it down. Draw your own conclusions... but there are plenty of lovely accomodations in the area, and my personal recommendation would be to go somewhere else!

“Wondeful place full of character!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2007

It was our budget hotel for our trip through Germany, but we loved it the most! From the moment I booked the room through email, Martin went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable. Upon arrival, Martin gave us a map on which he outlined a walking route to tour the best parts of the city. He made sure to point out places of interest, shops, and special look-outs over the city. We asked for a place to eat on our way out, and he gave many helpful suggestions.

We had a large spacious double room on the street-side with private bathroom. We loved the high ceilings, antique furniture, and surprisingly modern bathroom. We had beautiful large windows that really brightened the room. The shower had excellent water pressure and was nice and hot. I was a little worried at the sight of the bed with what looked like were old rough sheets. But, it was surprisingly comfortable and the sheets were very soft. My husband and I both slept wonderfully. In the morning, we did have street noise, however, I believe it was for setting up the Christmas markets, and would not otherwise have happened.

Even if the room hadn't been wonderful, the location would have made this place a hell of a find! It was truly ideal! It felt as if we were just stopping in at a family friend's house to stay for the night - completely cozy and taken care of.

“Positive Experience”

I had a pleasant stay at Pension Jeske. Martin went out of his way to make sure you felt at home and gave helpful information. You can tell that Martin loves his job and this shines through in his work. He was friendly and always happy to answer your questions. He is an excellent communicator - so I always knew when he was available to assist and when he would return (I really appreciate this as I was traveling alone) I was impressed with the cleanliness of my room, which was spacious with old style decor. My bathroom was clean! Nice location and affordable price. I'd recommend this place to anyone, especially if traveling on a budget.

“A Unique Spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 March 2006

Once you meet Martin of Pension Jeske, you'll realize this is a unique place. He puts a lot of energy into personalizing your stay, coming to your room and showing you maps of the highlights in the area and answering questions. Then, Martin is gone--and so is anyone else in charge of the operation. So be advised that you need to make sure your needs are met before he goes home. There is, of course, a phone number to call, and he returns the next day---but it's not like having a desk clerk.
The room was very old-world lovely, and the shared bath (we could have gotten a private bath but not on the night we wanted it)was clean and spacious and a real work of art. This is definitely not a mainstream hotel--you have to care more about the feeling of the place than the amenities (although all your basic needs are met). We were the only Americans; the other travelers were from all over--mostly young backpacker types, although we felt quite comfortable as older folk. The dark staircases, etc., that the other reviewer mentioned were nostalgic for me; I lived in the 1950s in Vienna and Switzerland and dearly remember the same creaking staircases and stair lights on a timer. A wonderful place to stay, if you want old-world charm and 21st-century consciousness.
