We stayed at the Hackteufel for a total of about 10 days in December. My husband, 18-year-old daughter and I were in Heidelberg to visit our son, who is studying there at the University this semester. Perfectly located in the heart of the Altstadt, a half block from the Alte Brucke (Old Bridge), the Hackteufel was a friendly, comfortable place to come home to after a day of sightseeing and shopping. The staff could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. The restaurant is wonderful--and popular among the locals, which tells you something. We enjoyed our breakfast there each day and also had dinner there a few times. The apple streudel is to die for! The only downside to the Hackteufel is that on weekend nights, streetside rooms are rather noisy. On our last visit to Heidelberg (several years ago), we stayed at der Europischer Hof, which is very posh, but a lot more expensive and not as well located. We would gladly return to the friendly, family-style Hackteufel if we have the chance!
