“Lovely traditional German guesthouse”

My husband and I stayed here during our honeymoon last month and loved it and Heidelberg. I agree with previous reviews praising the food (save some room if you can for one of the alcoholic ice cream desserts) and the great location of the hotel in the road leading up to the Alte Brucke. We didn't notice any nighttime noise, but after reading reviews on here, had specifically booked their 'Honeymoon' suite with it's own private terrace. This is on the top floor of the hotel and you have a great view over the rooftops and towards the castle. We'd recommend a castle visit , which is well worth the 5 Euro entry price which includes the 5 minute funicular ride to and fro. Plus an extra 4 Euro gets you an English language guided tour of some of the castle's rooms. And the food at the Hotel Zum Ritter on the nearby square was also fanastic - ask for the English version of their menu! I hope we'll be back there again soon...

“Great Location, but Noisy”

I planned to stay there for 3 nights but had to leave after the first night due to the noise at night. People were partying in the streets until 4 am and unless you are a very sound sleeper or a party animal yourself I would not recommend staying there. Rooms facing the courtyard are supposed to be quieter, but you can still here people coming and going in the hotel. At 6 am the noise started again inside and outside the hotel.
The room itself was very cosy, had a flatscreen TV, telephone, and internet access. The bathroom, if you could call it that, was more like a bathroom cubicle, very tiny and smelled like mold.
The food in the restaurant is excellent and breakfast was average. Personnel is very friendly and accommodating.

“A Home Away from Home”

We stayed at the Hackteufel for a total of about 10 days in December. My husband, 18-year-old daughter and I were in Heidelberg to visit our son, who is studying there at the University this semester. Perfectly located in the heart of the Altstadt, a half block from the Alte Brucke (Old Bridge), the Hackteufel was a friendly, comfortable place to come home to after a day of sightseeing and shopping. The staff could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. The restaurant is wonderful--and popular among the locals, which tells you something. We enjoyed our breakfast there each day and also had dinner there a few times. The apple streudel is to die for! The only downside to the Hackteufel is that on weekend nights, streetside rooms are rather noisy. On our last visit to Heidelberg (several years ago), we stayed at der Europischer Hof, which is very posh, but a lot more expensive and not as well located. We would gladly return to the friendly, family-style Hackteufel if we have the chance!

“Perfect Romantic Christmastime Hideaway”

For our one-night stay, we were given the room "under the sky" (room 12), which had a beautiful view of the Heidelberg rooftops and the castle. The atmosphere was perfect for a romantic getaway---from the gabled and beamed ceilings to the spacious bed---and the location is perfect--less than a minute from the Weinachtsmarkt, and only minutes from almost every other site worth visiting. My recommendation---try the pumpkin soup at the Hotel restaurant! It was one of the culinary highlights of our brief stay in Heidelberg. My only regret? Not having another two or three days at Hackteufel!
