I probably should give them 4 stars, but something about the place makes it uncomfortable and I probably would seek out an unknown hotel in the area rather than stay there again. There is nothing obviously wrong about the place, but something about it keeps me from going back.
It is quaint. The rooms are on the smaller side, but nicely furnished. They have a wonderful shower with those special shower heads that make a low pressure system still feel like a full pressure system. The room was clean and the beds quite comfortable, though there was an unfortunate 3 cm (apparently fecal) stain on one of the bed linens, I am sure that it was simply overlooked by the staff and when I made it apparent for the next day's cleaning, it was promptly removed and replaced. The TV is quite small (45 or 50 cm), but there is quite a lot of programming. Also, if you're watching TV while you're in Heidelberg, you've got other issues. The internet was fine for business and there is ample free parking. Also, the end of the Heidelberg train is about a half block away making this quite convenient.
The staff was always friendly, though the place seemed slightly like is almost trying to be tawdry, but fortunately not quite making it. You would expect the smell of must, but while I thought I might have detected it on occasion, I actually don't think I did.
The breakfast was ample, but uninspired and the dining room was always too hot.
So, I reread this review and I think, I should want to stay here again, but there is some intangible that affects me and I will not stay again. It's not a bad place, the staff is friendly, but I couldn't bring myself to do it again. Maybe its the stairwell and the hallways that look like they've been plucked from a 1960's Motel8. Maybe it's the shoe shine machine in the hall or the 10 Euro Spa invitation plastered on the hall's wall. It's something that just doesn't make it seem quite right. It's probably just me, so check it out and it's probably a wonderful place.
