Situated around 20 mins walk from the Altstadt,on the opposite side of the river, this is a simply lovely old hotel. The walk into town affords lovely views of the river, the castle, and the town bridge and gates. In the evening this is a delight.
The hotel is well appointed, and just wonderful to be in;the furnishings and decoration are simply gorgeous. Its guest history is well documented.
Our room was spacious and well appointed, with chairs, chesterfield etc everywhere. It had great character.
Reception was friendly and punctilious;there are generations of expertise at making guests feel welcome here.
Service in the restaurant was similarly excellent;friendly, but professional, with really good wine suggestions.
A previous Tripadvisor review suggested a rather haughty attitude at work here;we found absolutely no trace of this.
The food in the main restaurant (the gastronomic restaurant was closed on the night we chose to eat in) was of a good standard.
One thing;such excellence does not come cheap - all consumables are at the top end in price terms.
This is fine, but when something doesn't quite work,it is noticeable. Our room safe didn't work;we asked twice for it to be activated, but this hadn't happened by the time we left after three nights.
Probably a one off;but at a headline room rate of 285e pn,it simply shouldn't have happened.
Speaking of rates,we got a really good 3 night deal;well worth chasing up.
We would love to return, this time making more use of the hotel facilities (as first time visitors to Heidelberg we were more out than in).
Highly recommended, and as a destination in its own right
