“Incredibly central location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2011

The hotel is directly opposite the cathedral - the location really couldn't be more central. Parking is available, but you have to book in advance. Wi-fi is available in the rooms, and is free. Ours didn't work at first, but the owner was very helpful and sorted out the problem. The breakfast was generous (and tasty). Despite its central location, the room was actually quiet at night. We didn't find the bells disturbing, and didn't need to use the earplugs. We booked a suite for the three people, and the single bed was actually in its own room - not just a camp bed set up in the corner, as in many hotels.

Room Tip: The suite was great for families.

“Beautiful view of the Munster”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2010

Fabulous reception. Great dinner recommendation on a Sunday night when many restaurants are closed. Nice breakfast presentation. Good meals in the hotel restaurant. We had a very roomy suite with a nice bathroom. Staff was exceptionally friendly. Need to close windows at night to sleep (the church bells are really loud). A little hard to find but just persevere and find the Munster. Be sure to reserve a private parking space in advance.

“Charming Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

We really enjoyed our stay at this Hotel. It is a pleasurable 15 minute walk from the train station in a perfect location to enjoy the old city area of Freiburg. The front desk staff was very helpful and the breakfast was nice. It can be a little noisy at night with the bells and street noise but they supply ear plugs. I had to go to the lobby to use the WIFI Internet. We stayed on the street side of the Hotel which was fine.

“Good hotel in a delightful position.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

We stayed in Hotel Oberkirch for two nights. We had a large interconnecting family room on the 3rd floor, with one room overlooking the cathedral and square. We did not find the bells a particular problem (ear plugs were provided) and in fact rather enjoyed listening to them chime at varoius points during the night - the children did not seem to be disturbed by them at all. We drove to the hotel, and found it quite easily, although it was rather odd driving through a pedestrian area to get there! We parked in the hotel car park, which was free. We had one hotel restaurant dinner and sat at the tables outside which was very nice. Staff were friendly and helpful.

“Fantastic character but beware the bells!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

The hotel is approx 15 mins gentle walk from railway station through the old town of Freiburg past some beautiful old buildings. The hotel is fairly old with bags of character. As an older building it has lots of narrow walkways etc and although there was a lift from reception there are still some internal stairs that could be a problem for older visitors with heavy luggage. However, I'm sure the great staff would be on hand to help. Check-in was very easy without the need to take personal and credit card details etc which has become very routine, and we were left to complete the registration card in our room which was on the third floor overlooking the munster which gave a great view of munsterplatz out of the two windows. It was clean, nicely decorated and spacious with a large wooden bed and there were nice touches like fresh fruit. The room also had a free safe which is handy when traveling. The staff were great and the restaurant stays open quite late which is handy if you have spent the day sightseeing. Most of the staff spoke good english (even though I managed to communicate with them in German most of the time). The only downside to this hotel is that the bells of the munster ring out regularly throughout the night and do disturb sleep. Because it was cooler during our visit we could keep the double-glazed windows closed on most nights which reduced the noise. However, this wouldn't have been an option in warmer weather because the room did not have air-conditioning so you might want to request a room on the opposite (street) side if this would bother you. To be honest though, you are so close to the munster in this hotel that you'd probably hear them wherever your room was. The hotel has a fantastic location and in nicer weather we would have eaten outside in the munsterplatz. Freiburg is very easy and safe to walk around in the evening and boasts the oldest pub in Germany (Zum Roten Baren, 1120!) which is pretty cool if you a beer aficionado. Finally, if you are searching for a brewpub in Freiburg I found it on our last morning on a back street near to the Schwabentor...somewhere to visit when we return. I'd definitely stay in this hotel if we return and I'd have no hesitation in recommending it to other travellers.
