We stayed for just one night in Freiburg and as it was a trip full of nostalgia for my days as a student in this gorgeous town, I was willing to pay a bit extra to be located right in the Muenster Platz with a room overlooking the Cathedral.
The room was small (bathroom was TINY) and spotless, with lovely wooden furniture and fluffy fresh bed linen.
It's easy to find from the main train station. Just aim towards the Cathedral and enjoy winding your way through Freiburg's many character laden streets. We saw the 'Hotel' sign at the side of the Hotel Rappen building, and rang the bell which was promptly answered by one of the restaurant staff. We were checked in at the bar and shown to our room. I'm not sure what time the hotel reception opens, but we did't see anyone at the desk (upstairs) that day.
Our first encounter with a hotel staff member was when we were asked, a tiny bit abruptly, to check-out when running into them in the corridor in the morning. We had just returned from a walk and it was around 11am (our train didn't leave until 12ish). We were packed and ready to go and intended to check out after collecting our bags; we thought we had plenty of time as the hotel information said that the room didn't need to be vacated until 12pm - if this is not the case, it should be changed.
For the price, free wifi would have been nice, I've stayed in cheaper places, where this is included.
Essentially what you pay for here is the location and view which is worthwhile for one night, if you want to do something a bit special.
