“Small and spotless rooms - the main thing you're paying for is the view and location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

We stayed for just one night in Freiburg and as it was a trip full of nostalgia for my days as a student in this gorgeous town, I was willing to pay a bit extra to be located right in the Muenster Platz with a room overlooking the Cathedral.

The room was small (bathroom was TINY) and spotless, with lovely wooden furniture and fluffy fresh bed linen.

It's easy to find from the main train station. Just aim towards the Cathedral and enjoy winding your way through Freiburg's many character laden streets. We saw the 'Hotel' sign at the side of the Hotel Rappen building, and rang the bell which was promptly answered by one of the restaurant staff. We were checked in at the bar and shown to our room. I'm not sure what time the hotel reception opens, but we did't see anyone at the desk (upstairs) that day.

Our first encounter with a hotel staff member was when we were asked, a tiny bit abruptly, to check-out when running into them in the corridor in the morning. We had just returned from a walk and it was around 11am (our train didn't leave until 12ish). We were packed and ready to go and intended to check out after collecting our bags; we thought we had plenty of time as the hotel information said that the room didn't need to be vacated until 12pm - if this is not the case, it should be changed.

For the price, free wifi would have been nice, I've stayed in cheaper places, where this is included.

Essentially what you pay for here is the location and view which is worthwhile for one night, if you want to do something a bit special.

“Great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2008

We booked only one night during our holiday-tour in Germany, but after the first day we decided to spend another night at Rappen and another day in Freiburg!
The hotel position is amazing: we got the room just in front of the magnificent cathedral. The park is 9euro per days; ask for it to the hotel when booking: they sent us by mail a map with the information to reach the discounted park and at check in gave us a special ticket in order to pay the discounted price. Even if the hotel is away from the park and in a pedestrian area, you can reach by car a road a just few steps away from the hotel lateral entrance, and stay there for some minutes to load and load your luggage. Negative: the hotel does not have its private park numbers: when we reached the park we found it completed, so we had to wait for about 20min in line to get a park place.
Bathroom and room were spotless and good sized. Room Wi-fi connection very good. I think that for this hotel you pay a little more for the position, but it worths the money.
The breakfast is standard.I cannot say too much about the hotel restaurant.
Employees were very kind. We loved Freiburg, because of the the large number of furniture shops, art galleries and good restaurants.

“Nice Location and authentic”

Getting there 9/10

Flew direct to Basel and got the Airport Bus to Freiburg Station. About a nice 10 mins walk to hotel. However the rail network is excellent and i got a train back

Hotel location10/10

Shines its locations is excellent and worth paying the extra for the Munster View.

Hotel 9/10

Very rustic and authentic and looks very nice from the outside staff were very helpful

Rooms 6/10

Big enough, furnishings were a bit poor and the Bathroom was very small with only a 3/4 bath. I would suggest modernising the rooms a little to give them a more modern feel. But it is only a minor criticism

Breakfast arrangments 9/10

Excellent with a good selection of food even though the hotel was more or less empty. One of the best breakfast arrangments set in a nice dining room

Freiburg itself 8/10

We only stayed 2 days and saw it all. You will need to know a little german as there are no translated menus. Nice bars and restaurants and a number of various day trips available

Summary

I would recommend Freiburg for a 2 day break and also the hotel due to its location

“Awesome location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2007

When arriving, the hotel is a bit difficult to access because it sits over a restaurant. You can either try the side door, but thats locked (although there is a doorbell) or you can walk into the restaurant with your bags and access the stairs/elevator up to the hotel. This isn't a big deal, but it would have been nice to have some explicit instructions from the hotel on what to do. But once you are checked in, your room key gives you access to the side door so you can avoid the restaurant.

The rooms are nice, clean, but a bit plain. The bathroom was awkward. It had the strangest shower doors I've ever seen. However, the room we had faced Munsterplatz and it was amazing! Open up the windows and you have full view of the town church (its huge!) along with the sights and smells of the daily farmers market.

Access to the trams is only a couple blocks away and the main train station is about a 10 minute walk.

The room is clean and the beds are comfortable. Everything is new and shiny. The location is perfect, right next to the huge Church. The breakfast was very fresh and full of foods from the region.
