“Terrific spot in the heart of Freiburg!”

The Hotel Sum Roten Baeren has been an inn for travelers for centuries, and still serves that role admirably. My friend and I were only planning to stay for one night at the hotel, but we enjoyed it so much that we extended for another night. We were very happy with the location and extremely friendly service. Beautiful Freiburg is steps away, and we roamed many of the streets in the Old Town area and beyond. We also enjoyed shopping in the market around the cathedral, which was a lovely treat.
The restaurant in the hotel is very good. The salad that I had before dinner was so fresh it was springing from the bowl, and had delightful little details such as matchstick radishes that really made the flavor pop. My duck was delicious, and the roasted potatoes had a perfect crust, creamy center, and great flavor. Dessert was a medley of creme brulee, chocolate cinnamon ice cream, and fruit...perfect!
Our room at the hotel opened onto the rear courtyard. The decor was perhaps a bit outdated, but I found that to be somewhat charming. The room was very clean and comfortable. When we arrived we noticed a wonderful bowl of fresh fruit and chocolates on the side table, which we finished to the stems. That was a very nice touch. I would also add that the front desk staff were all very nice, friendly, and helpful. Should I return to Freiburg, I would not hesitate to stay here again.

“Over performs on service and location underperforms on amenities.”

I liked this hotel however there are a few things you must know before booking:
Pros:
Great location, friendly and helpful staff, clean room, lovely furnishing
Cons:
No air-conditioning however we did have a heater, no Internet at all, small CRT tv.

We weren't that impressed with breakfast, but we are possibly a bit fussy in that department.

“Splendid choise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

We stayed here just for one night without any prebooking in the beginning of October and finded this hotel very good both in cleanliness and location in the middle of town. Also the rate was good and friendly atmosphere. The restaurant seemed to be one of the best in Friburg and on that weekend they served a delicious 4-course pumpkin-menu as a seasonal tradion. Buffet-breakfast was ok, too. Public garage was abt. 300 m apart but for the hotelguests only 8€ for a day. We'll use this inn in future and can also recommend it as accommodation.

“Small outdated room, but fantastic location and friendly staff”

We found Hotel Zum Roten Baeren by chance and were grateful we did. The room was really outdated, but had a patio door that opened onto a courtyard for a nice breeze. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant, and while rather pricey, thoroughly enjoyed the meal and ambiance. It was nice to have a great meal in the midst of wurst and the standards. The location of this hotel would be enough to take me back. Freiburg is an adorable city.

“All-in-one guesthouse for peaceful nights and great food”

I am surprised that Zum Roten Baeren is not the top of the list here on trip advisor. I stayed there four nights, by myself (older woman), and had a lovely experience. As many have noted, the rooms are large and 'gemutlich' / cozy. The restaurant downstairs serves lunch and dinner and , though a bit pricy, the cooking is worth it. I did not partake of the breakfast (for 12 euros I could not see it), but the hotel is right between two nice bakery/cafes.
Freiburg itself was a little young and a bit too crowded for my taste, but the hotel was in a lull area and every night it quieted down beautifully.
If you want a 'part of the street scene' experience, ask for a room overlooking the street. I wanted --and got-- a restful quiet room at the end of a hall and overlooking the courtyard. Wonderful church bells woke me in the morning, but that was fine by me.
My room had a couch, little table and chair, flat panel tv, three full size french windows that opened, a nice bathroom with a decent magnifying makeup mirror (a rarity!), a desk, and a huge chiffarobe with lots of hangers.
The only down side, and it was admittedly one that made life a little harder for me, was that the internet access was pay per hour from TMobile and it did not work in my room. I had to go out to the ballroom/breakfast room to use it and the charge added up considerably, since i had to keep checking in with the home folks.
But still, on balance the Roten Baeren was a find. Dear Hubby and I are planning to go back next year, and make this our first stop/jet-lag-recovery hotel after flying into Zurich (2 hrs by train).
