Due to the strength of the Euro and weakness of Sterling this year we searched for a budget hotel when visiting Talloires, and decided upon Le Lac mainly because it cost “Only” 150 Euros / night B&B. The French Alps and Lake Region is very expensive when compared to Austria, Italy and even Switzerland so we knew we were at the bottom end of the market. But in many ways Hotel Le Lac was a good choice.
The location was close to, but not on, the lake. Just a short walk up the hill from the pier. The pretty pool was a good size, and even if a little chilly had a nice lounging area. There was a bar/restaurant outside under the trees beside the pool and a nice atmosphere outside and around the pool and in the gardens. There was free parking all around the hotel, with enough spaces.
The economy showed itself in our room, which apart from the nice lake-view had little to recommend it. Bare walls, something like underlay on the floor, hard bed, and the feeling of something between a youth hostel and a detention centre. Okay, I exaggerate a little, but it was far from homely.
The ancient elevator broke down forcing us to carry all our luggage up and down 5 floors, and the staff were hard to locate, but friendly enough once tracked down.
We knew we were going for budget, and I’m glad we got the view and pool.
Talloires is a beautiful spot, but was quite underpopulated when we visited, and at the prices around I’m not surprised. We ate out and found that as soon as we left town and dined along the lake, it was better value and cheaper and indeed better food. Annecy nearby is great for a visit, one of the prettiest lake towns you will ever see.
