I spent one night here, refused to shower and went the next morning to book a hotel through the tourist bureau.
The bedroom itself was comfortable enough. Only 6 people to a room is much nicer than the 20 beds to a room hostel I'd been in in Amsterdam. There seemed to be people of all ages here, which I also liked. The "locker" I was promised in the bedroom was only big enough to hold my camera, travel documents and wallet. Otherwise I had a drawer under the bed. My room looked over the patio which has a noisy bar scene until very late. There were sinks in the bedroom and it was reasonably clean. The bathrooms were another story. The toilet rooms smelled heavily of urine, worse than a port o'potty. The showers were filthy and lacked a shelf or hooks of any kind. Um, where exactly do I put my stuff??? I go camping, so I'm fairly liberal about where I do my personal business. I refused to shower here. Also, the reception are had ants. Lots of ants.
Be prepared for a hike up Montee du Chemin Neuf that is akin to summitting Mont Blanc. It's much higher and much more steep than you expect. I'm still recovering from knee surgery and the first walk up this hill wrecked my knee. This was the main reason for switching to a hotel, but the lack of security and the gross bathrooms were definitely a factor. You can take the funicular up and walk down, but it's still a terrific hike. If you put the address into Google Maps, it doesn't show you the accurate location.
Overall, I was not pleased. The bed was mostly clean, the bathrooms were ridiculous, the reception area needs an exterminator. They can make you food and serve you beer. They have a great view. Some people seem happy here, but I won't go back.
